Frank W. Woolworth was born in Rodman,New York,in 1852. His family was very poor farmers, and there was never enough to eat. Frank decided he did not want to be a farmer. He took a short business course, and went to work as a salesman in a large city.
Woolworth realized he had a natural skill for displaying goods to arouse people's interest, but he soon learned something more important. One day his boss told him to sell some odds and ends(小商品)for as much as he could get.Frank put all these things on one table with a sign which said: FIVE CENTS EACH. By 1919, Woolworth had over 1,000 stores in the USA and Canada, and opened his first store in London. He made many millions and his name became famous throughout the world. He always ran his business according to strict rules,of which the most important was:\"THE CUSTOMER (顾客) IS ALWAYS RIGHT.\"

Every August on the island of Heimaey, off the southern coast of Iceland(冰岛),young people often take a walk along the streets throughout the night. What's more, their parents allow them to stay out. Why? The children of Heimaey are going to save young puffins——small black-and-white seabirds. The cliffs(悬崖)above the town are home to a large group of puffins. The birds dig holes all around the cliffs. These holes are their homes. Their young stay in the holes for about seven weeks. Then they begin to leave. Some move slowly on their undeveloped wings and feet down to the northern Atlantic Ocean that surrounds Heimaey. There, they swim, which they can do naturally, and learn to dive for fish. Others, however, may lose their way at night and find themselves in the town instead. On the ground, the young seabirds are in trouble. Because their wings are not fully developed, they
8
cannot take off quickly to sea and safety. The birds then become a good meal for cats and other animals.
For many years, islanders have helped the young puffins. Early at night in late August, children carrying thick paper boxes and lights hurry to the seashore to catch puffins. They spend most of the night running after the birds. They put the birds they've caught in boxes and take good care of them. The next morning the children take the puffins to the ocean and set them free. The birds will live at sea until they are at least two years old. Then they will return to the cliffs to build homes of their own for their families.
Will the children of Heimaey always come to save puffins? \"Yes,\"answer the boys. \"We look forward to it. The best time for us is setting the birds free.\"

67.The young seabirds that lose their way and find themselves in the town are in danger . A.of being killed by hunters B.of being driven away from the town C.of being killed by animals D.of being starved to death 68.The children put the seabirds in boxes .
A.and look after them very carefully for several days, then, set them free B.and set them free when they grow bigger and can take off to sea and safety C.and carry them to the ocean right away to set them free D.and they don't set the birds free until the next morning 69.The children look forward to August because . A.they enjoy playing the game of running after seabirds B.it's time for them to go out at night to save puffins C.it's time for the children to play with the birds
D.the children can stay out at night to watch puffins coming to the town 70.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT TRUE?
A.Once in a year the children are allowed to stay out to have a good time with birds, cats, and animals.
B.The earliest home for the young puffins is in the cliffs, not in the sands of beaches.

根据短文内容,完成表格内容。每空最多可填3个单词。
Many animals and plant species(物种) have become extinct(绝迹) and many more are in great danger. Dodo
The Dodo is a classic example of how human caused damage to the earth biology. The fightless Dodo was native to the Island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. The easily controlled bird became a source of food for sailors and was attacked by animals introduced to the island by human such as pigs, monkeys, and rats. The population of Dodos rapidly decreased and the last one was killed in 1681. Rhinos
The Rhinos horn is a highly priced item for Asian medicine. This has led to the animal being hunted in its natural habitat.Once widespread in Africa and Eurasia, most Rhinos now live in protected natural parks and reserves.Their numbers have rapidly decreased in the last 50 years, and the animals remain under constant hunting from poachers(非法打猎). The Giant Panda
The future of the Giant Panda is far from certain. As far as 1,000 remain in the wild. The Chinese government has set up 33 panda reserves to protect these beautiful animals. However, the panda’s black and white patched coat fetches a high price on the black market and determined poachers still perform one of the most serious threats(威胁) to the animal’s continued existence. Whales
Despite(尽管) the fact that one-third of the world’s oceans have declared whale reserves,7 out of 13 whale species remain endangered.Hunted for their rich supply of oil, their numbers have decreased to just 300.Striking against ships, poisonous pollution, and being caught in fishing nets are other major cause of whale deaths. Tigers
The last 100 years has seen a 95% reduction in the numbers of remaining tigers to between 5,000 and 7,000 and the Bali,Javan, and Caspian tigers are already extinct. The South China tiger is close to disappearing, with only 20 to 30 still alive.Like the Rhino horn, tiger’s bones and organs are sought after for traditional medines. These items are traded illegally along with tiger skins.

At five to three on Monday afternoon Miss Green went along to the lecture room. There were about twenty students waiting there for her.\"I'm sorry,\" she told them, \"I won't be able to give my lecture today.\" The students looked surprised. Miss Green explained that she had an important meeting. \"However,\" she went on, \"although I can't be with you myself, my voice can!\" Then she put a small tape recorder on the desk. \"You see, I've recorded my lecture and you can listen to it without me.\" Thinking that she had settled the matter, Miss Green turned on the recorder and left. The meeting finished a little early. Miss Green decided to go back to her students. She stood for a moment outside the lecture room, listening to her own voice. Then very quietly, she opened the door.To her surprise, the room was empty. As she looked around, she saw a number of small recorders all \"listening\" to her lecture!

录音稿与参考答案
Text 1 M: I’d go to the cinema more often if there were more new films.
W: Oh, it’s funny, isn’t it? Read reviews of new films in the papers and you’ll think. “Oh, I must see that.”--- but it just never comes to the local cinema.
Text 2 M: Have you got your Christmas shopping done yet?
W: Almost. I got a watch for my husband, but I can’t seem to find anything for my daughter. She would probably like a toy or something for her stamp collection.
Text 3 M: Sara, my wife got some film developed in a shop nearby, but she lost the bill. Could you go with us to the shop? You know, we need a French speaker to explain the matter.
W: Certainly. I think they will show you the photos and then you’ll know which one is yours.
Text 4 M: Is there anything wrong, maeam?
W: There certainly is. This fish is not fit to eat. To start with, it’s overcooked, and then it’s cold too. M: I’m sorry about that. I’ll have it changed.
Text 5 W: Look! There’s a machine over there.
M: Oh, good. I’ll get some money out and we can have a drink now. Er… W: What’s up?
M: I forget my card number.
Text 6 M: I’m sorry, madam, but dogs aren’t allowed in the theatre.
W: But I have a ticket for him. Besides, my dog is so well trained and so clever that it’s almost human. M: I see you’ve got an unusual dog, but…
W: I promise you that if there is any problem, we’ll leave the theatre immediately.
M: Well, I’ll let you in this time. The theatre is almost empty tonight.
Text 7 M: Where have you been these days? W: In the hospital.
M: Ih the hospital? What happened?
W: Didn’t you know that our room caught fire last Friday evening?
M: Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. But what caused the fire? W: Well, the light in our room was turned off at 11:30 as usual. Alice lit a candle to go on reading. Unfortunately she fell asleep with the candle still burning beside her. Then her bed caught fire. M: Oh, my God! How was Alice?
W: She was badly burnt and is still in hospital. M: Was she the only one burnt?
W: No. There were two more, including me.
M: I think you should be more careful in the future. W: We will.
Text 8 M: Mrs. Tyler, there is something I’ve been wondering about. W: What is it?
M: Some people say that women’s work is in the house. But I don’t think so. Maybe it’s different in your country.
W: Well, of course. You hear all kinds of ideas. But I think it’s true. Women’s work is at home.
M: Work at home is important, of course, but I think it should be shared. What I’m saying is that women should work outside the house because they can do a lot to help.
W: There is plenty to do at home. Besides, women are better at housework and men are better at business. M: Excuse me, but I don’t agree.
Text 9 W: Welcome listeners to another exciting programme of “You Collect What?” I’m Sandra Marshall and this is the show where each week we ask a collector to talk about their unusual collection, but first you have to guess what it is! Today’s collector is Norman Wilson. Now, Norman, can you tell us a little about your collection?
M: Yes, I keep them all over my house. I have over one thousand altogether, and…
W: Over one thousand! How big are they?
M: Oh, they’re fairly small, and I keep most of them in cupboards.
W: And what do these things look like?
M: Well, they are very colourful and beautiful to look at. They come in many different shapes. Some are in the shape of animals, or people, or… W: Are they different sizes too? M: No, they’re all the same size. W: Hm. And what are they used for?
M: Well, you put them over something very normal, and boring…to make it look more interesting.
W: Oh, yes? Er… is whatever you put these things over… something useful, perhaps something you use every day?
M: Yes, espeicially if you’re sad or have a cold. W: Hmm. Well, thank you.
Text 10 M: Mrs. Brenda, excuse me for asking you straight away. Why did you decide to write police stories?
W: Well, I enjoy police stories myself. But I think if I can write a successful police story, it will be a wonderful training for me to become a serious writer. M: Where do you get the ideas?
W: It’s hard to explain where the ideas come from. But usually with me, the book starts with a setting--- a place such as an old house, a lonely beach. And after the setting, come the people and after the people, the actions.
M: And how do you actually go about writing the book?
W: Well, after the idea and before the actual writing, there may be quite a long period. I go everywhere with a notebook . I do my research. I plan exactly what’s going to happen…
M: Well, thanks for giving the interview.

书面表达 A little before three, we were already in the lecture room when our teacher Miss Green came in. She said she couldn't give us the lecture because she had to go to an important meeting. However, she had recorded her lecture for us. So she put a recorder on the desk, turned it on, and left.
We listened to the lecture for a while. Some of us even took notes. But there would be a film at four. We were all eager to go. What should we do? We started to whisper. \"Why can't we do the same as Miss Green?\" someone suggested. \"Good idea!\" many of us cried out immediately. Happily we walked out of the room, leaving our recorders there.
