According to the World Wildlife Fund, the polar bear could be faced with extinction and a large number of other animals reduced to very small remnant populations by global warming in Arctic regions.

Warmer winters are r 1 for the thinning or disappearance of ice sheets in many parts of the Arctic, 2 (result) in a situation where polar bears are at risk of 3 (starve) because they cannot travel to their normal breeding and hunting grounds.

Even in places 4 there is still a lot of ice around, polar bears are under threat because they rely on snow caves to rear their young. 5 of the warmer weather, some of these caves now collapse suddenly and bury the bear cubs inside.

Other effects of c 6 change are also being observed. Animals such as reindeer (known as \"caribou\" in North America) have adapted 7 the extreme cold and are therefore able to cope with the Arctic climate. For m 8 of years they have been migrating to places where they breed and find food. These 9 (migrate) coincide with the growing seasons of the plants they feed on. 10 (ecology) have found, however, that these animals are now arriving at their spring feeding grounds too late, and the 11 they eat have gone to seed. This is having a s 12 impact on caribou herds. A substantial number of calves are being lost and there is already a substantial 13 (reduce) in the size of the herds. 八、Part Ⅳ Reading Comperhension(总题数:0,分数:0.00) 九、Section A(总题数:1,分数:10.00)

In the 1970s, many people became concerned about energy. People in developed countries had to face up to the fact that they used too much energy, and energy sources weren\"t going to last forever. One architect, Michael Reynolds, decided to do something about this. He set out to design homes that were cheaper to build and more energy-efficient. In addition, he wanted to do something about the rubbish problem, and came up with the idea of \"earthships\".

Although \"earthship\" sounds like the name of a boat, an earthship is actually a house. However, it is a house with a difference. Earthships are constructed from garbage, and they are built using only 10 percent of the energy needed to build an ordinary house. Moreover, after they are built, earthships use only 10 percent of the energy required to heat, light and cool a regular home. One of the big benefits of earthships is that they are made from recycled materials. The main construction material of an earthship is used tires that are filled with dirt. The dirt-filled tires are then laid flat and stacked like bricks. Because tires are round, there is lots of extra space between columns of tires. These spaces are filled with used cardboard. The tires and cardboard form the outside walls of an earthship. The wails between rooms inside don\"t need to be as strong, so these walls are made with old cans, bottles and cement. All the walls are then covered and painted. In the end, the house looks just like a typical home.

Another benefit of an earthship is that it saves energy and natural resources. For example, an earthship uses less water than an ordinary house. Rain water, which is collected on the roof, is used for drinking and bathing. Furthermore, earthships need much less energy than ordinary houses for healing and cooling because they are built partly into the ground. This stops the inside of the house from getting too hot or too cold.

All of these features make earthships very environmentally friendly. That\"s one of the reasons they have caught on throughout the world. Earthships have been built in Bolivia, Australia, Mexico, Japan, Canada, England, Scotland and all over the US. Maybe in the near future, an earthship will be landing near you!

十一、Section C(总题数:1,分数:10.00)

For many years large supermarkets have been encouraging us to spend money by pumping the smell of freshly-baked bread into their store. Now Dale Air, a leading firm of aroma consultants, has been approached by Barclay\"s Bank to develop suitable artificial smells for their banks. Researchers have suggested that surrounding customers with the \"smell of money\" will encourage them to relax and feel optimistic and confident about a bank\"s security and professionalism. However, before a smell can be manufactured and disseminated through air conditioning systems

into banks, it must be identified and chemically analysed, and this has proved to be difficult. The problem is that banknotes and coins tend to pick up the smell of their surroundings, so cash that has been sitting in a cash register at a fishmonger\"s will smell of fish, and banknotes used to pay for meals in restaurants will tend to smell of other types of food.

It may be a challenge, but aroma experts have little doubt that the use of an artificial smell of money will be an effective form of subconscious advertising. Lunn Poly, a British travel company, introduced the smell of coconuts into its travel agencies and saw a big increase in spending by holiday makers. Many cafes now have machines that release the smell of freshly roasted coffee near their entrances, subtly encouraging customers to come in and have a drink or snack. Even prestige car maker Rolls-Royce sprays the inside of its cars to enhance the smell of the leather seats.

\"The sense of smell is probably the most basic and primitive of all human senses,\" explains researcher Jim O\"reiordan. \"There is a direct pathway from the olfactory organs in the nose to the brain.\" It is certainly true that most people find certain smells incredibly evocative, and that these smells stir up memories and feelings in a way that few other stimulants can rival. It is a phenomenon marketing consultants have long recognized, but until recently have been unable to harness. \"We\"ve made great progress but the technology of odour production is still in its infancy,\" says O\"reiordan.

Say whether the following statements are true or false (分数:10.00)

(1).Dale Air has produced an artificial \"smell of money\" for Barclay\"s Bank.(分数:2.00) A.正确 B.错误 √

(2).It is difficult to identify the smell of real money.(分数:2.00) A.正确 √ B.错误

(3).Shoppers are aware of the effect smells have on their spending.(分数:2.00) A.正确 B.错误 √

(4).Translate the underlined sentences.(分数:2.00)

__________________________________________________________________________________________ 正确答案:()

__________________________________________________________________________________________ 正确答案:()

十二、Section D(总题数:1,分数:10.00)

The Wai Wai are a tribe of about 250 people who live in the Amazon jungle. This tribe has had little contact with the modern world. In fact, their nearest neighbour, another tribe of native people, live so far away that it takes three weeks to walk from one village to the other. One of the few Western people who have visited the Wai Wai is Colonel John Blashford-Snell of the Scientific Exploration Society. In March 2002, he spent two months visiting the tribe and giving them medical help.

On the last day of his visit, the village priest approached Colonel Blashford-Snell to ask him a favour. As the colonel explained, \"He wanted a grand piano to put in the village church. I said, \"Do you have any idea what a grand piano looks like?\" He said he had seen pictures of one in a book. I told him that I didn\"t think he\"d ever be able to play a piano, and he replied, \"No, no, we are musical people.\" Then he said, \"God moves in mysterious ways.\" And so I took up the challenge.\"

Back in England, Colonel Blashford-Snell was offered a 360 kilogram grand piano as a gift from the Millennium Gloucester Hotel in London. Next, he needed to find a way to get the piano to the village deep in the Amazon jungle. First, Colonel Blashford-Snell and his team flew the piano as far into the jungle as they could by helicopter, but getting the piano from there to the village was no easy feat. With the help of a few people from the tribe, they put the piano on a sledge and pulled it several miles through the jungle to a river using ropes. Then they loaded the piano into two dugout canoes and started up the river. Finally, they arrived at the base of the mountain where the village is situated, and with the help of more tribe members, they were able to carry the piano to the top of the mountain, and thus the piano arrived at its new home in the Amazon rain forest!

Six months later, Colonel Blashford-Snell went to visit the tribe, and took two piano tuners with him because he knew the heat and dampness in the jungle would have a bad effect on the piano. After clearing out the insects nesting inside the piano and making extensive repairs, the Wai Wai, in cooperation with the piano tuners, recorded a CD to raise money for the tribe. The CD included a variety of hymns sung by the Wai Wai, a West Side Story medley, and the Beatles classic \"With a Little Help from My Friends\".

Read the passage carefully and then complete each space in the summary, using a maximum of three words from the passage.

26.Suppose you are Zhu Liang, and the following is part of a letter your friend, Jenny, wrote to you. Read it and then write Jenny a reply of at least 80 work, answering the questions she has asked. Do not include your own name or address.

I am doing a survey, and would like you to participate. Please tell me; what kind of music you like, and how long you\"ve liked it; who your favourite bands and singers are, and why you like them;

how long you spend listening to music every day, and what equipment you use. I look forward to hearing from you.

__________________________________________________________________________________________ 正确答案:() 解析:Dear Jenny,

I learn from your last letter that you are doing a survey and I\"m pleased to answer those questions. Pop music has always been my favourite music since I was in middle school. Whenever I feel depressed, as long as I listen to it, I will feel much better. Well, many singers are pretty cool and have their own characteristics. But I like Stefanie Sun best, since her music is pleasant to hear and her light songs have the magic to cheer people up when they are blue. As I have said, I like pop music very much, so I\"m always listening to it, that is about 4 to 5 hours a day, perhaps a little bit too long, right? Most of the time I will carry my walkman to listen to music, but sometimes I also use the CD player in my house.

I hope you\"re satisfied with my answer and good luck with your survey.

Yours sincerely,

Zhang Liang

27.A new magazine has invited readers to discuss the following statement: Junk food is the worst food.

Write an article of at least 120 words discussing the statement.

__________________________________________________________________________________________ 正确答案:() 解析:

Junk food is the worst food

When it comes to the statement \"Junk food is the worst food\seems that people are surrounded by junk food, but not many can resist the temptation of one kind or another even though they are well aware of the harm it could cause.

The hazards that come with the junk food are more than we could possibly imagine. The notorious junk food carries with it an excessive amount of fat, oil, cholesterol, sugar, preservatives, etc., which poses a hidden yet grave threat to our health. As we know, obesity is very common among schoolchildren and young people, which to a large degree is owing to the consumption of too much junk food. Nevertheless, it\"s not all. Junk food can cause high blood pressure and other chronic diseases. Some junk food even contains certain ingredients, which will trigger cancer if taken too much. How horrible is that!

In summary, I definitely agree with the idea that junk food is the worst food.
