The world is not only hungry but also thirsty for water. This may seem strange to you, since nearly 70%of the earth's surface is covered with water. But about 97%of that is sea water or salt water. Man can only drink and use the other 3%of fresh water from rivers, lakes, underground and so on. And we can not even use all of that because some of it has been made dirty.
Earth Day is April 22. But on all other days, we must also remember how important water is. The water that we use is the most important natural resource on the earth. Today we face serious water problems. One of them is water pollution. All kinds of things from cars, factories, farms and homes make our rivers, lakes and oceans dirty. Polluted water is very bad for people to drink. And dirty water is bad for fish, too. How do cars and factories make our water dirty? First they pollute the air. Then when it rains, the rain water makes our drinking water dirty. Dirty rain, called acid rain(酸雨), is also bad for plants, animals and buildings. Scientists say that in 30 years, more than half of the people in the world won't have enough dean water. We have to learn how to stop wasting water. One of the first steps is to develop ways of reusing it. Today in most large cities, water i~ used only once and then sere out into a sewer system(下水道). From there it returns to the sea or goes underground. But even though every large city reused its water, we would still not have enough. So we should make use of sea water by removing the salt in it. If we can take these steps, fresh water won't be used up.

One cold winter night in Shanghai, I was walking home at one in the morning after long tiring work. I was having trouble with my job in the bank. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up living there. City life had become too much for me. As I walked down empty streets, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both
to keep warm and to keep away any possible danger. Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets(毛毯).
Suddenly, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, all I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. When I reached home, I realized what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.
Now I wasn’t cold or tired anymore. I ran back to where I’d heard the noise. Although I searched carefully for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found. Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck(垃圾车)come to me. When a voice called from the inside, “Alisa Chen?” I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man “Is this what you’re looking for?” he asked, holding up a small square shape. It was nearly 3 a. m. by the time I got into bed. But I had got my wallet back. I also had got back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn’t be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.

People often say, “Children can’t do math problem, it’s because parents can’t do their children’s homework.” Here’s an example to show what I mean.
The other day my daughter brought home her math homework. “I have to subtract (减) 179 from 202,” she said.
“It’s quite easy,” I said. “You put the 202 over the 179.” “But we need a 10 here. Where is the 10?”
“I don’t know where the 10 is. Let’s just subtract 179 from 202. Nine from two is three. You carry one and add it to seven. Eight from zero is two. The answer is 23.”
“We can’t do it that way. We have to use the 10.”
“Well, I’m going to call your teacher to see how she subtracts 179 from 202.” Over the telephone, I said that I was having a bit of trouble with the homework she had given to my daughter. The teacher said, “In the right-hand column (栏) we have units of one. The two in that column counts for two ones. The zero in the center counts for zero tens. The two in the left-hand column counts for hundreds. Are you clear?” But I didn’t think I was clear.
I hung up and found my way to the medicine box. My head was now hurting. I started putting pills of medicine into my mouth. “How many did you take?” my wife asked.
“I took one and then I took another…I know one and one was two, but don’t ask me what it is now.”

D. her father to help her with her homework 2. Which of the following sentences is not true?
A. The father had a different way to do the math problem. B. The father couldn’t do his daughter’s homework. C. The daughter couldn’t understand her father’s way. D. The daughter had some trouble doing the math problem.
3. From what the teacher said, we know that the word “units” means ______ here. A. whole numbers less than 10 C. groups of lessons
B. whole things
D. the smallest numbers
4. What the teacher said made the father _________. A. angry
B. worried
C. sad
D. tired
5. Can you guess what would happen next in the story? A. The father would go to school and begin to learn math.
B. The father would become very ill and have to take more medicine. C. The father would never do his daughter’s math problems again. D. The father would go to the school and fight with the teacher.
2. B。根据“but I didn’t think I was clear.”以及“I took one and then I took another…I know one and one was two, but don’t ask me what it is now.”
4. D。由“My head was now hurting.”

Linda Evans was my best friend—like the sister I never had.We did everything together: piano lessons, movies, swimming, horseback riding.

One day a card that I sent came back, stamped “Address (地址) Unknown.” I had no idea how to find Linda. Over the years, I missed Linda very much. I wanted to share (分享) happiness of my children and then grandchildren. And I needed to share my sadness when my brother and then mother died. There was an empty place in my heart that only a friend like Linda could fill.
One day I was reading a newspaper when I noticed a photo of a young woman who looked very much like Linda and whose last name was Wagman
— Linda’s married name. “There must be thousands of Wagmans,” I thought, but I still wrote to her.
She called as soon as she got my letter. “Mrs Tobin!” she said excitedly,“Linda Evans Wagman is my mother. ”
Minutes later I heard a voice that I knew very much, even after 40 years, laughed and cried and caught up on each other’s lives. Now the empty place in

An Activity for Reading
This activity is developed(开发) by reading experts for you to use with children. Doing the activity with your children helps you develop their reading skills while having fun at the same time. If the reader finishes one book and asks for another, you know you are succeeding!
We wish you spend wonderful hours of reading with children! This summer holiday, we will invite some families to the program “Readers” to read aloud poems or books you like, and share your reading experience. Activity: Read to me
It's important to read to your child, but equally important to listen to them read to you. What you'll need: Books at your child's reading level. What to do:
▲Read good books to your child. Parents who read aloud to their children are
developing their interests and skills in reading. Encourage your children to listen, express their ideas, and ask questions.
▲Take turns. You read a paragraph and have your child read the next one. If your child becomes easier with reading aloud, you can ask him or her to read a full page. ▲Listen carefully as your child reads. Listening to your child will encourage them to practice reading. Besides, this is another way to enjoy reading together. ▲If your child has trouble reading words, you can help him or her in some ways:
●Ask the child to jump over the word and read the rest, then try to guess the meaning of the missing word.
●Guide your child to use what he or she knows about letter sounds. ●Tell your child that you are proud of his or her hard working. Learn more: Visit http//tv.cctv.com.
