Passage 44:

Most Americans believe that good education is quite necessary to democracy and social progress. Even during their colonial time the settlers attached great importance to setting up schools for their children, because these puritans were firm believers in education. They tried hard to establish enough schools for their children. The schools were not only to teach children how to read, write and calculate but also to train clergymen. The first college, Harvard, was set up in Massachusetts in 1636. Soon after, the colonial government passed a law requiring every town of more than 40 families to have a school and school master. By the mid-eighteenth century several well-known colleges were founded, including Columbia in New York and Princeton in New Jersey. They were used to train young people.

Education did not develop very fast in the South where big plantation owners did not want to build schools for the children of the poor workers and slaves. Children from rich families usually went to England for higher education. This was one the reasons why the South developed more slowly than the North.

There was also the story of three boys at school, each of whom received a cake sent from home. Inpulsively( 冲动之下), she had married a man she thought she loved. Bill went away , bitter about women. Yesterday, walking across Washington Square, she saw him for the first time in years.

―Bill Valker,‖ she said. He stopped. At first he did not recognize her , to him she liked so old. ― Mary!‖ Unconsciously, she lifted her face as though wanting a kiss, but he held out his hand. She took it, ―I live in New York now‖, she said. ― Oh‖—smiling politely . Then a little frown (皱眉) came quickly between his eyes. ― Always wondered what happened to you, Bill.‖ ―I‘m a lawyer. Nice firm, way downtown‖, ―Married yet?‖ ― Sure. Two kids.‖

A great many people went past them through the park. It was late afternoon. Nearly sunset. Cold.

― And your husband?‖ he asked her, ― We have three children. I work in Columbia.‖

― You‘re looking very….‖( he wanted to say old) ―…well,‖ he said.

She understood. She had been older than he in Ohio. ― We live on Central Park West.‖ She said. ― Come and see us sometime.‖

―Sure,‖ he replied, ― You and your husband must have dinner with my family some night. Any night. Incille and I‘d love to have you.‖

Passage 48:

If you‘ve been joining in chat room conversations, or trading e-mail with net pals, you have become one of the millions who write in a special , short form of English.

Throughout the world, every night children and their elders are ― talking‖ online---many of them are talking at the same time.

It‘s fast: trying talking to six people once. It‘s convenient: three or four woods per change . It takes cleverness, concentration and quick fingers.

And it requires very simple language. There‘s neither time no space for explanations. Why waste precious time telling six friends you have to leave for a moment to take care of your little brother when BRB(=be right back ) will do?

Want to enter a conversation? Just type PMFJI (= pardon me foe jumping in ).

Interested in whom you‘re talking to ? Type A/S/L, the common request to know your pal‘s age, sex and location. You may get 15/M/NY as a reply from your pal.

If something makes you laugh, say you‘re OTF(= on the floor), or LOL,(laughing out loud), or join the two into ROTFL (= rolling on the floor laughing ).

And when it‘s time to get back to work or go to bed , you type GTG(=got to go ) or TTYL,(= talk to you later).

People want to write as fast as possible, and they want to get their ideas across as quickly as they can. Capital letters are left in the dust, except when expressing feeling , as it takes more time to hold down the ―shift‖ key and use capitals. Punctuation is going too.

It is now commonly known that AIDS is a deadly disease . It does great damage to human being‘s immune system(免疫系统), weakening resistance to disease and leading to death due to utter weakness. To this day , there are no existing drugs, that can kill the AIDS virus . It is a deadly battle between science and AIDS.

This is only one side of the story. Although it cannot be cured, AIDS is preventable . For those who have not caught the disease, the knowledge of preventive measures seems to be the most powerful weapon at hand.

Since the discovery of the first AIDS patient in 1985, the number of HIV carriers(艾滋病毒携带者) has been on an alarming rise in China and statistics show that young people are the more likely victims of AIDS. Nationwide there are 214 million people between ages of 13 and 22 , most of whom are students. If no measures are taken to protect these young people, it is almost certain that the threat of AIDS will be real to them. There has been a great deal of misinformation concerning the transmission of AIDS.

One of the most misleading myths (神话) is that AIDS can be transmitted by casual physical contact such as kissing , shaking hands or sharing food containers. The eggs in a basket are part of a new school program that helps young people understand that having a baby is a great duty.

At the beginning of the program, the teacher puts the students in pairs----one girl and one boy. Each pair gets an egg, which they must take care of for two weeks. For those fourteen days , the students have to take care of the eggs as though they were real babies. Students whose eggs get broken have to start the two weeks all over again with a new egg.

One person in each pair must have the egg with him or her at all times---twenty ---four hours a day. At no time can they let the egg be out of sight. ―If a teacher catches you without your egg, ―said one student, ―she makes you go get it . They are really strict.‖ The teachers also make the students spend half an hour each day sitting with the egg and just watching it. That can get pretty boring. Passage 51:

Technology today has stolen away our voices and robbed our children of memories. I‘ve been keeping count of how often people sing around the house these days. The fact is , they don‘t.

My earliest memories are of my mother crooning lullabies

as she rocked each infant in turn. She said she ―didn‘t have a singing voice.‖ But her low, wavering alto will always mean comfort to me. Every time I have sat through the night with a feverish baby or held a preschooler through a nightmare, the melodies returned, words appearing and disappearing like fragments of a dream but held together by the hum of love.

Today, young mothers are routinely presented with Lullaby tapes at the baby shower. When baby cries, the idea goes, they will be able to switch on the high-tech audio system and the little one will drift off----the voices of strangers in his ears, perfectly on pitch. If I had my way, new parents would learn the songs themselves, throw out their stereos, and give their child the gift of their own sleepy voices through the midnight hours. These days, when we go on a trip, my daughters

take along tiny personal stereos and headphones. They are lost in their private worlds , and I can‘t help wishing that at least here, in the car my girls would be obliged to listen to their mother‘s voice raised in lost-words-again, sure-I‘m –out –of—tune songs that they might then pass down to another generation . The duck was the now- famous Donald Duck, who first appeared in 1934 in the film the Wise Little Hen. Donald lived in an old houseboat and bore his sailor jacket and hat. Later that year he became a star after an eight-minute Mickey Mouse film. The cinema audience liked him because he was lazy and greedy, and they loved his voice when he became angry with Mickey‘s eight nephews. Soon Donald was more popular than Mickey Mouse himself, probably because he wasn‘t a goody-goody like Mickey.

In the 1930s, 40s and 50s Donald and his friends Mickey, Goofy and Pluto made hundreds of Disney cartoons. He also made educational films about the place of the USA in the world and safety in the home. Then in 1966 Donald Duck and his voice disappeared--- there were no more new cartoons.

Among them was ―ice cream‖. For each day of the wedding festivities Catherine‘s cooks prepared a different flavor of her favorite dessert---―ice cream.‖

At first ice cream was a luxury in France. Only rich people had money to buy it . Then, in 1660, a young man from Sicily, Francisco Procopio, arrived in Paris. He opened

16

a shop that sold ice cream at prices people could afford. Procopio‘s ―ice-cream parlor‖ became so popular that other shops were opened.

About 1640, King Charles I introduced ice cream to England. He had heard it was popular in Italy and France. He served ice cream for dessert at a banquet. The surprise dish was a great success. Passage 60

How men first learnt to invent words is unknown; in other words , the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men , unlike animals , somehow invented certain sounds to express thought and feelings , actions and things ,so that they could communicate with each other ; and that later they agreed upon certain signs , called letters , which could be combined to present those sounds , and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters , we call words.

The power of words , then , lies in their associations-the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience ; and the longer we live , the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past ; and the more we read and learn , the more the number of words that mean something increases.

Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. Wells took some of the gas, and his friend pulled out one of Well's teeth. Wells felt no pain at all.

As he didn't know enough about laughing gas, he gave a man less gas than he should have. The man cried out with pain when his tooth was being pulled out.

I was very disappointed not to be able to go to the jazz concert last Friday. The ad. in the paper said that you could buy tickets at the theatre box office in Richland Hills any day between 10:00 and 4:00. Since I work from 9 o‘clock to 5:30, the only time I could go to the theatre was during my 45-minute lunch break. Unluckily, the theatre is on the other side of the town, and the bus service between my office and Richland Hills is not very good. But if you are lucky, you can make the round trip in 45 minutes.

Last Monday, I stood at the bus stop for 15 minutes waiting for a bus. By the time I saw one come around the corner, there was not enough time left to make the trip, so I gave up and went back to the office. The same thing happened on Tuesday, and again on Wednesday. On Thursday, my luck changed, I got on a bus right away and arrived at the theatre in exactly 20 minutes. When I got there, however, I found a long line of people at the box office. I heard one man say he had been waiting in line for over an hour. Realizing I would not have enough time to wait in line, I caught the next bus and headed back across the town. By Friday I realized my only hope was to make the trip by taxi. It was not cheap, but I felt it would be worth it to hear the concert. Passage 69

When weather is hot, you go to a lake or an ocean. When you are near a lake or an ocean, you feel cool. Why? The sun makes the earth hot, but it cannot make the weather very hot. Although, the air over the earth becomes hot, the air over the water stays cool. The hot air over the earth rises. Then the cool air over the water moves in and takes the place of the hot air. When you are near a lake or an ocean, you feel the cool air when it moves in .You feel the wind, and the wind makes you feel cool.

Of course, scientists cannot answer all of our questions. If we ask, ―Why is the ocean full of salt?‖ scientists will say that the salt comes form rocks. When a rock gets very hot or very cold, it cracks. Rain falls into the cracks. The rain then carries the salt into the earth and into the rivers. The rivers carry the salt into the ocean. But then we ask, ―What happens to the salt in the ocean? The ocean does not get more salty every year.‖ Scientists are not sure about the answer o this question.

Cars are lots of fun, but they could also be dangerous. We have to be careful when we drive them or ride in them.

It‘s always a good idea to put on your seat belt when you‘re in a car. Why? Think about this example: You put an egg on a skateboard and give it a push. If the skateboard hits a stone, it will stop, but the egg won‘t. It will fly through the air, hit the ground and break.

Now, think what would happen if you tied the egg to the skateboard. When the skateboard hits a stone, the egg won‘t go flying, it will stay safely on the skateboard

Volvo, a famous Swedish car maker, was the first to use seat belts in 1849.

Air bags are also very important for car safety, because sometimes a seat belt isn‘t enough. If the car is going really fast and runs into something, seat belt could even hurt the people who wear them.

As long as the sun shines, the earth will not run out of energy. The sun pours more energy on earth than we can ever use. Most of that energy comes to us as heat and light. Energy from the sun is called solar energy.

Anything to do with the sun is called ―solar‖. The word began with the Roman word for the sun and their god of the sun, who was called Sol. Solar energy is a safe kind of energy. It doesn‘t make pollution or have dangerous leftovers. That is why scientists and investors are experimenting with ways of harnessing (治理利用) the sun to do some of the jobs fossil fuels have been doing.

But to make the sun do work like that, they have to solve some problems. They have to collect the sun‘s energy. Collecting sunshine is not easy, unless you are a plant. Passage 76

Many people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go in to their offices or schools every day by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening.

One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one‘s own.

Then , in the country one can really get away from the noise and hurry of busy working lives. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend one‘s free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs

which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has got the reward together with those who have shared the secret of Nature.

Some people, however, take no interest in country things; for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinema and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance-halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. The scientist, however, goes one step further, he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his questions and that his answer can be confirmed by other persons. He also works to fit the answers he gets to many questions into a large set of ideas about how the world works.

The scientist‘s knowledge must be exact. There is no room for half right or right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any changes the scientist observes in a demonstration must be explained by the changes in the conditions. This is one reason that investigations are important in science. Albert Einstein, who developed the theory of relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics. The accuracy of his mathematics was later tested through investigations, Einstein‘s ideas were shown to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurements. Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investigations. (263 words)

Passage 80

A characteristic of American culture that has become almost a tradition is to respect the self-made man—the man who has risen to the top through his own efforts, usually beginning by working with his hands. While the leader in business or industry or the college professor occupies a higher social position and commands greater respect in the community than the common laborer or even the skilled factory worker, he may take pains to point out that his father started life in America as a farmer or laborer of some sort.

This attitude toward manual (体力) labor is now still seen in many aspects of American life. One is invited to dinner at a home that is not only comfortable but even luxuriously (豪华地) furnished and in which there is every evidence of the fact that the family has been able to afford foreign travel, expensive hobbies, and college education for the children; yet the hostess probably will cook the dinner herself, will serve it herself and will wash dishes afterward, furthermore the dinner will not consist merely of something quickly and easily assembled from contents of various cans and a cake or a pie bought at the nearby bakery. On the contrary, the hostess usually takes pride in careful preparation of special dishes. A professional may talk about washing the car, digging in his flowerbeds, painting the house. His son who is away at college may wait on table and wash dishes for his living, or during the summer he may work with a construction gang on a highway in order to pay for his education. (291 words)

distinguished by uncommon courage, achievements, and self-sacrifice made most for the benefits of other –they are people against whom we measure others. They are men and women recognized for shaping our nation‘s consciousness and development as well as the lives of those who admire them. Yet, some people say that ours is an age where true heroes and heroines are hard to come by, where the very idea of heroism is something beyond us-an artifact of the past. Some maintain that because the Cold War is over and because America is at peace our age is essentially an unheroic one. Furthermore, the overall crime rate is down, poverty has been eased by a strong and growing economy, and advances continue to be made in medical science.

Cultural icons are hard to define, but we know them when we see them. They are people who manage to transcend celebrity(明星), who are legendary, who somehow manage to become mythic. Passage 82

Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are excessively concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: What kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?

It is obvious that such uncomfortable feeling must negatively affect people. A person‘s conception of himself or herself is reflected in the way he or she behaves, and the way a person behaves affects other people‘s reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a profound effect on all areas of their lives.

Shy people, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing ―the right thing.‖ Shy people are very sensitive to criticism: they feel it confirms their feelings of inferiority. They also find it difficult to be pleased by compliment with a statement like this one: ―You‘re just saying that to make me feel good. I know it‘s not true.‖ It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful.Can shyness be

completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determined and patient efforts in building self-confidence. Since shyness goes hand in hand with a lack of self-esteem, it is important for people to accept their weakness as well as their strengths.

Each one of us is a unique, worthwhile individual, interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our full potential. Let‘s not allow shyness to block our chances for a rich and fulfilling life. (289 words)

Passage 87

Britain and France are separated by the English Channel, a body of water that can be crossed in as few as 20 minutes. But the cultures of the two countries sometimes seem to be miles apart.

Last Thursday Britain and France celebrated the 100th anniversary (周年纪念) of the signing of a friendship agreement called the Entente Cordiality .The agreement marked a new beginning for the countries following centuries of wars and love-hate partnership.

But their relationship has been ups and downs over the past century. Just last year, there were fierce disagreements over the Iraq war-which British Prime Minister Tony Blair supported despite French President Jacques Chirac speaking out against it. This discomfort is expressed in Blair and Chirac‘s body language at international meetings. While the French leader often greets German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder with a hug (拥抱) ,Blair just receives a handshake. However, some political experts say the war in Iraq could in fact have helped ties.

The history of divisions may well be because of the very different ways in which the two sides see the world. But this doesn‘t stop 12 million Britons taking holidays in France each year. However, only 3 million French come in the opposite direction. Surveys (调查) show that most French people reel closer to the Germans than they do to the British. And the research carried out in Britain has round that only a third of the population believes the French can be trusted. Perhaps this bad feeling comes because the British dislike France‘s close relationship with Germany, or because the French are not happy with Britain‘s close links with the US. Whatever the answer is, as both sides celebrate 100 years of ―doubtful friendship‖, they are at least able to make jokes about each other. The French Revolution broke out in 1789. At the time France was in a crisis. The government was badly run and people‘s lives were miserable. King Louis XIV tried to control the national parliament and raise more taxes. But his effort failed. He ordered his troops to Versailles. The people thought that Louis intended to put down the Revolution by force. On July 14,1789, they stormed and took the Bastille, where political prisoners were kept. Ever since that day, July

14 has been the French National Day. Louis tried to flee the country in 1792 to get support from Austria and Prussia. However, he was caught and put in prison. In September 1792, the monarchy was abolished. In the same year, Louis was executed. A few months later his wife, Marie also had her head cut off. The Revolution of France had frightened the other kings of Europe. Armies from Austria and Prussia began to march against France. The French raised republican armies to defend the nation. Passage 89

In the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 p.m.. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it's a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance.

In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, it would be too impolite. A person who is 5 minutes late, he will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.(260 words)

16. What is the main idea of this passage?

B. The role of time in social life over the world. 17. What does it mean in the passage if you call someone during his or her sleeping hours? B. A matter of life or death. 18. Which of the following time is proper if you want to make an appointment with your friend? B. at 4:00 pm

Passage 90

A foreigner's first impression of the U.S. is likely to be that everyone is in a rush-often under pressure. City people always appear to be hurrying to get where they are going restlessly, seeking attention in a store, and elbowing others as they try to complete their errands(任务). Racing through daytime meals is part of the pace of life in this country.

Working time is considered precious. Others in public eating places are waiting for you to finish so that they too can be served and get back to work within the time allowed. Each person hurries to make room for the next person. If you don‘t, waiters will hurry you.

You also find drivers will be abrupt and people will push past you. You will miss smiles, brief conversations, and small courtesies with strangers. Don't take it personally. This is because people value time highly, and they resent someone else \"wasting\" it beyond a certain courtesy point.

The view of time affects the importance we attach to patience. In the American system of values, patience is not a high priority. Many of us have what might be called ―a short fuse.‖ We begin to move restlessly about if we feel time is slipping away without some re-turnbe this in terms of pleasure, work value, or rest. Those coming from lands where time is looked upon differently may find this matter of pace to be one of their most difficult adjustments in both business and daily life.

Many newcomers to the States will miss the opening courtesy of a business call, for example, They will miss the ritual interaction that goes with a welcoming cup of tea or coffee that may be a convention in their own country. They may miss leisurely business chats in a café or coffee house. Normally, Americans do not assess their visitors in such relaxed surroundings over prolonged small talks. We seek out evidence of past performance rather than evaluate a business colleague through social courtesies. Since we generally assess and probe professionally rather than socially, we start talking business very quickly.(348 words)

If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time,

they will become weak, when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way.

When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong.

But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parent may be blamed, and few of us know that it is just his own fault. We say them when someone gives us a drink, helps us to pick up things, hands us a letter, lends us book or gives us a gift.

Another important word is ―please‖. Many people forget to use it. It is rude to ask someone to do something without saying ―please‖. We have to use it when we ask for something, too. It may be a book or a pencil, more rice or more sauce, help or advice. It may be in the classroom , at home, at the bus-stop or over the counter. Passage 98

E-mail is one of the biggest threats (威胁) to your home computer. By understanding how E-mail works, and by taking some steps in how you deal with reading and writing messages, you can keep this threat out of your computer. When you exchange E-mail with someone else, the messages sent between you and that person pass through several computers before they reach their places. Imagine this conversation as it is taking place in an Internet ―room‖, a very, very big room. Anyone, or more exactly, any program can probably understand what is being said, because most Internet conversations are not hidden in any way. As a result, others may be listening in, capturing what you send, and using it for their own good.

E-mail-borne viruses often arrive in attractive, fantastic appearances, much like the beautiful ads we receive by way of traditional mail that is made to sell us something. By beautiful appearances, an infected (感染) E-mail message seems to be something we want to read from someone we know, not a mean virus ready to destroy or damage our computers.

There are some steps that you can take to help you decide what to do with every E-mail message with an attachment (附件) that you receive. You should only read a message that passes all of these tests:

1) The Know Test: Is the E-mail from someone that you know?

2) The Received Test: Have you received E-mail from this sender before?

3) The Expected Test: Were you waiting for E-mail with an attachment from this sender?

4) The Meaning Test: Do the topic line of the E-mail message and the name of the attachment both have meanings?

5) The Virus Test: Is the E-mail infected?

1. Which of the following is the main idea in the first paragraph?

C. We should learn how E-mail works to take care of our computers.

2. What does the underlined word ―capturing‖ probably mean?

A. taking

3. As the Internet is open to anyone, we should _________.

30

D. be careful with the attractive E-mails sent by strangers

4. What is the passage mainly talking about? B. The safety of home computers.

Passage 99

A friend of mine was fond of drawing horse. He drew the horses very well, but he always began the tail. Now it is the Western rule to begin at the head of the horse, that is why I was surprised. It struck me that it could not really make any difference whether the artist begins at the head or the tail or the belly(肚子) or the foot of the horse, if he really knows his business. And most great artists who really know their business do not follow other people‘s rule. They make their own rules. Every one of them does his work in a way peculiar(奇特的) to himself; and the peculiarity means only that he finds it more easy to work in that way.

Now the very same thing is true to literature(文学). And the question, \"How shall I begin?\" only means that you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail or somewhere else. That is, you are not yet experienced(有经验的) enough to trust to your own powers. When you become more experienced you will

never ask the question, and I think that you will often begin at the tail --that is to say, you will write the end of the story before you have even thought of the beginning. 1. A friend of the writer‘s drew the horses ____. C. in the way of his own rule

2. The writer was surprised because ____. D. the artist did not follow other people‘s rule 3. You are not yet experienced because ____. D. you do not trust to your own powers

4. When you become more experienced you will ____. C. should write the end of the story 5. The topic of the passage is ______. D. Trust to your own powers

The first Monday in September is Labor Day in the United States. It marks the unofficial end of summer and a traditional signal that school is about to start.

But now public schools often begin sometime during August. They have different reasons for starting early.

The Tucson Unified School District in Arizona began classes on August eleventh. Communications Director Chyrl Hill Lander says the earlier start time makes it possible for

31

students to take semester(学期) exams before winter vacation in December. She says the school district also wants to follow a calendar similar to that of the nearby University of Arizona.

Many schools in Virginia still open the day after Labor Day. But the public schools in Montgomery County, in the southwestern part of Virginia, began classes on August twentieth. Human Resources Director Mark Pashier says his county has been opening schools in August for at least the past eight years.

Passage 106

When I begin to look back on all friends whom I have had, I quickly came to the conclusion that Jerry was the most important and had the greatest effect upon my life. His family moved to my block when I was only 10. Jerry was 15 at the time, but the fact that he was so much older than me seemed to make no difference to him. I was very glad that he liked me. We took long walks together, on which he would tell me stories he had heard form TV and radio programs.

But as months went by, a change came into our friendship. Jerry almost stopped coming by the house, and every time I went to his house or telephoned, he put me off with some excuses such as ―I'm studying now‖ or ―I've got some jobs to do for Mum‖. When we passed on the street, he would still give me a warm smile and friendly wave with a ―Hi, kid‖, but he would hardly ever stop to talk. Finally I realized that he was no longer interested in me and that his taste had changed. I noticed him with a girl once in a while and several times saw him going out in his family's car on a Friday or Saturday night. I simply couldn't understand what was so great about girls and parties.

But I was hurt when he finally made me know that our friendship was at an end. Of course he didn't really mean to hurt me, but it was a long time before I realized that it was an age problem that caused the break. There were a world of differences between the ideas and interests of a 17-year-old and a 12-year-old. Now that I'm over sixteen myself, I realized this, and the hurt I got then has become happy memories of the good times we were once together. I wonder if millions of other boys and girls have had a similar experience.

One day in 1965, when I was a library worker at school, a teacher came to me. She had a student who finished his work before all the others and needed something more difficult for him to do. ―Could you help me in the library?‖ she asked. I said, ―Send him along.‖

Soon, a golden-haired boy appeared. ―Do you have a job for me?‖ he asked. I told him about a system for sorting books. He picked up the idea immediately. Then I showed him some cards for some unreturned books that I thought had been returned but not recorded. Maybe some books were put on wrong places. He said, ―Is it a kind of a detective (侦探) job?‖ I answered yes, and then began his work.

He had found three books with wrong cards by the time his teacher opened the door and said, ―Time for rest!‖ he argued for finishing the finding job, but the teacher won.

The next morning, he arrived early, ―I want to finish these books,‖ he said. At the end of the day, when he asked to work with me more often, it was easy for me to say yes. After a few weeks I found a note on my desk, inviting me to dinner at the boy's home. At the end of a pleasant evening, his mother declared that the family would be moving to another school. Her son's first concern, she said, was leaving the library. ―Who will find the lost books?‖ he asked. When the time came, it was hard to say goodbye. Passage 108

People often say that the Englishman's home is his castle. They mean that the home is very important and personal. Most people in Britain live in houses rather than flats, and many people own their homes. This means that they can make them personal, and change them in any way they like. Most houses have a garden, even if it is a small one, and the garden is usually loved. The house and the garden are the private space of a person. In a crowded city a person knows that he or she has a private space which is only for himself

33

or herself and for invited friends.

People usually like to mark their space. If you are on the beach you may have spread your towels around you; in the rain you may have put your coat or small bag on the seat beside you; in a library you may spread your books around you.

Once I was traveling on a train to London. I was on a section for four people and there was a table between us. The man opposite to me had his briefcase on the table. There was no space on my side of the table at all. I was unhappy. I thought he thought that he owned the whole table. I had been reading a book about nonverbal (非语言的) communication so I took various papers out of my bag and put them on his case! Passage 110

Our child's behavior is greatly influenced by the way we react to what he has done. Our reactions help to determine whether our child will repeat his behavior or whether he will do something different. This statement is a very important part of a principle of behavioral psychology.

The principle states that a behavior is influenced or affected by how the environment ---- people, places and things ---- immediately responds to the behavior. Perhaps without realizing it, you have used this principle many times.

On the occasion when you told your child what a good boy he was after he cleaned up his room, you used the principle. When you sent your child to his room for fighting with his brother, you used the principle. When I gave Kim a cookie after she started to cry, I used the principle. In each of these examples, a particular behavior occurred first ---- cleaning up a room, fighting, and crying.

In addition, there was a reaction to each behavior ---- the child was praised, sent to his room, or given a cookie. By these actions, we have influenced the previous behaviors and have helped to determine whether those behaviors will occur again in the future.

(1).What is the lecture mainly about? 答案(C) C. Children's behavior and our response.

(2).On what kind of principle is the lecture based? 答案(B) B. A principle in behavioral psychology.

Passage 133 Younger people and older people do not always agree. They sometimes have different ideas about life, work and play. But in one special program in New York State, adults and teenagers live together in peace. Each summer 200 teenagers and 50 adults live together for eight weeks as members of a special work group. Everyone works several hours each day. The aim is not just to keep busy but rather to find meaning and enjoyment in work. Some teenagers work in the woods or on the farms near the village. Some learn to make furniture and to build houses. The adults teach them these skills.

There are several free hours each day. Weekends are free, too. During the free hours some of the teenagers learn photography or painting. Others sit around talking and singing. Each teenager chooses his own way to spend his free time.

When people live together, rules are always necessary. In this program the teenagers and the adults make the rules together. If someone breaks a rule, the problem goes before the whole group. The group discusses the problem. They ask, “Why did it happen? ” “What should we do about it? ”

Passage 134

The modern sailing ship was developed by a man who never went to sea. He was Prince Henry of Portugal, the younger son of the Portuguese king and an English princess.

Prince Henry lived on the fifteenth century. As a boy he became devoted to the sea, and he dedicated himself to improving the design of ships and the methods of sailing them. In 1416, when he was twenty-two, Henry founded a school for mariners, to which he invited everyone who could help him-Jewish astronomers, Italian and Spanish sailors, and Arab mathematicians and map makers who knew how to use the compass of the day and could improve it.

Henry's goal was to design and equip vessels that would be capable of making long ocean voyages without having to keep close to the shore. The ship, which he helped design, carried more sails and was longer and slimmer than any ship then made, yet was tough enough to stand up against gales at sea. He also developed the carrack, which was a slower ship, but one that was capable of carrying more goods. The world owes credit to Prince Henry for the development of craft that made oceanic exploration possible. He lives in history as Henry the Navigator.

Passage 135

Since their strongest connection has always been with family, when it comes to friendship, the French seem to be more careful than the British. A Frenchman may be ready to start a chat with a stranger in a

train or café and a discussion with feelings, but the speakers will remain unknown to each other by name; personal questions are not asked in most cases.

The British and Americans are certainly more open than the French when meeting new people, developing them quickly into friends, asking them home, and calling them “Bill”. The French themselves admit that they are careful in developing new friendships in a society still based on mistrust(猜疑), and much talking has to be done before this mistrust disappears.

Yet the French consider the British-American style of so-called friendship to be lacking in depth. The French do not make true friendship lightly, and most of these are formed in youth, or slowly over the years among co-workers. Once made, they will be lasting and faithful. But except at a higher executive (行政的) level, office co-workers do not often try to meet each other socially and casual friendship is seldom seen between workers of different grades. This can make life lonely for anyone who arrives to work in a new town, especially Paris, without existing friends. However, the pattern has been changing in the past ten years, especially among younger workers and in new-style offices open to American methods.

(1).The French are usually closest to their _____.答案(C) C. family (2).Generally speaking, when a Frenchman talks with a stranger, he ______.答案(B)

B. is ready to talk with feelings

(3).According to the passage the British ___.答(C) C. invite new friends to their homes sometimes (4).The following statements are true EXCEPT ______.答案(D)

D. The French do not have true friends

(5).The best title for the passage may be __.答(B) B. The French Style of Friendship

Passage 136

When a man and a woman get married, it is one of the biggest decisions they will make in life. A man may select a woman because he, in his own eyes, sees her as the just-right wife for him. Every man has his own definition of what the “just-right” wife is. For example, the rich man and the poor man both may define their just-right wife according to her physical qualities.

A rich man may describe his “just-right” wife as charming, beautiful, wise and well developed. On the other hand, a poor man may define his “just-right” wife as pleasing, attractive, smart and shapely. Both men describe their just-right wife by the same physical qualities but use different words.

Although some men define the just-right wife by her physical qualities, other men describe their just-right wife by her other qualities. For example, the outdoor man may define his just-right wife as

43

a woman who love to fish, to camp, and to hunt, while the inside sportsman may define his just-right wife as a woman who enjoys watching football, basketball and tennis. Both of these define their just-right wife by her sports qualities but in two different ways.

Men from all countries also have their definition of the just-right wife. For example, the Italian man describes his woman who stands six feet one inch tall with golden hair and blue eyes. On the other hand, the French man may describe his ideal woman as a woman who stands only five feet three inches with brown hair and green eyes

(1).Which of the following will an “outdoor man” love to do according to the passage?答案(C)

Passage 137

Advertisement can be thought of \"as the means of making known in order to buy or sell goods or services\". Advertisement aims to increase people's awareness and arouse interest. It tries to inform and to persuade. The media are all used to spread the message. The press offers a fairly cheap method, and magazines are used to reach special sections of the market. The cinema and commercial radio are fairly cheap and more permanent in their power of attraction. Other ways of increasing consumer interest are through exhibitions and trade fairs as well as direct mail advertisement.

There can be no doubt that the growth in advertisement is one of the most striking features of the western world in this century. Many businesses such as those handling frozen foods, liquor, tobacco and medicines have been built up largely by advertisement. We might ask whether the cost of advertisement is paid for by the producer or by the customer. Since advertisement forms part of the cost of production, which has to be covered by the selling price, it is clear that it is the customer who pays for the advertisement. However, if large-scale advertisement leads to increased demand, production costs are reduced, and the customer pays less. It is difficult to measure exactly the influence of advertisement on sales. When the market is

growing, advertisement helps to increase demand. When the market is shrinking, advertisement may prevent a bigger fall in sales than would occur without its support. What is clear is that businesses would not pay large sums for advertisement if they were not convinced of its value to them.

(1).Advertisement is mainly paid for by ____.答(A) A. the customer

(2).Advertisement can increase demand ____.答案(C) C. in a growing market

(3).By the last sentence of this passage the author tells us that _______.答案(D)

D. advertisement usually cost businesses large amounts of money

(5).The word \"media\" (Para. 1) includes ___.答(D) D. all of the above

Passage 138

As prices and building costs keep rising, the “do-it-yourself” (DIY) trend in the U. S. continues to grow.

“We needed furniture for our living room,” says John Ross, “and we just didn't have enough money to buy it. So we decided to try making a few tables and chairs.” John got married six months ago, and like many young people these days, they are struggling to make a home at a time when the cost of living is very high. The Rosses took a two-week course for $ 280 at a night school. Now they build all their furniture and make repairs around the house.

Jim Hatfield has three boys and his wife died. He has a full-time job at home as well as in a shoe making factory. Last month, he received a car repair bill for $ 420. “I was deeply upset about it. Now I've finished a car repair course, I should be able to fix the car by myself.” John and Jim are not unusual people. In order to save money, most families in the country are doing everything they can so that they can fight the high cost of living. If you want to become a “do-it-yourselfer”, you can go to DIY classes. And for those who don't have time to take a course, there are books that tell you how you can do things yourself.

Passage 139

In 1801, Thomas Jefferson was the first president to take the oath(誓言) of office in the nation's permanent capital, Washington D.C. Although Washington was a new city, it was already familiar to President Jefferson. In fact, Jefferson had helped plan the capital's streets and public buildings. Besides being a city planner and architect(建筑师), the new President was a writer, a scientist, and the inventor of several tools. Jefferson lived in the Presidential Palace. The Palace was more than a home; it contained offices for the President and some of his staff and advisors. It also included dining and reception rooms, where the President could entertain congressmen. However, President Jefferson did not give many formal parties. This was partly because there was no First Lady. Jefferson's wife had died in 1782. But it was also because Jefferson liked to live in a simple fashion. Once, he showed up for an important meeting wearing old clothes and slippers! Neither Washington nor Adams would ever have dressed so casually.

Jefferson was different from the first two Presidents in other ways, too. He disagreed with them about how the country should be run, and about what part a President should play in running it.
