2.to去掉,考查固定搭配,had better do sth.\"最好做某事\",因此去掉to.

3.an改为a,one﹣month的one是以辅音音素开头的单词,因此前面的冠词用a,不用an,an是用于元音音素开头的单词.

When doctors urge overweight kids to pick up more activities, reading probably isn’t what they have in mind. Yet a new study by fatness researchers at Duke University finds that the simple act of reading—depending on the choice of material—can cause weight loss in teenage girls.

The study’s experimental group included 31 fat girls aged 9 to 13,who took part in the Healthy Lifestyles Program at Duke Children’s Hospital. The girls read a novel called Lake Rescue, whose protagonist (主人公) is an overweight teenager who struggles with low self-esteem,feelings of loneliness and teasing because of her size. A group of 33 girls read a different book called Charlotte in Paris, which did not have an overweight character, and another group of 17 girls read neither book.

At the end of the six-month experiment, all the girls who read books had lost weight, but the girls who read Lake Rescue lost more. They lowered their body mass index (BMI) by 0.71,compared with 0.33 in the Charlotte group,an average 0.05 increase among the nonreaders.

The idea behind the study, says Dr Sarah Armstrong, director of Healthy

Lifestyles, was to find a way to encourage the girls without adopting the restrictive and often authoritative voice of so many other nutrition and diet programs. Lake Rescue was the perfect instrument, says Armstrong;it presents a likable character to whom the girls could relate and whom they could learn from. As the book progresses, its

protagonist learns to make healthier lifestyle choices and finds an adviser to help keep her on track. Armstrong says,“She learns that she can become healthier, and the ‘I can do it’ feeling resonates (产生共鸣) with the teenage girls.”

36.What’s the main idea of the passage?

A.There are different ways to help overweight kids lose weight. B.Lifestyle is important for kids.

C.Lake Rescue is the perfect weight-losing instrument. D.Reading can help kids lose weight. 37.How many girls took part in the experiment?

38.What does the underlined word “She” in the last paragraph refer to?

A.Armstrong. B.The protagonist in Lake Rescue.

C.A character in Charlotte in Paris. D.A girl in the first group. 39.According to the passage we can know that ________.

A.overweight girls are living unhappily B.reading is the best way to lose weight

C.different reading materials play different roles in losing weight D.people will become fat if they don’t read

40.In which part of a newspaper can we read the above passage?

22. On Thanksgiving Day, nine years ago, I stole my father’s car.

He was 88 years old and living in a retirement community in Ojai. The previous July, he had failed his driver’s test, but he’d kept driving without a license, as if he had forgotten that he didn’t have a license, or as if he hadn’t cared, but something had to be done.

On Thanksgiving morning, I drove up to fetch him for a turkey dinner, and while he finished getting ready, I stole his spare car keys. So Dad spent the night at my house. The next day, after a long talk in which he still refused to relinquish his keys, I drove him home with a friend, who would drive my father’s car back to my place. I was so nervous and eager for the whole thing to be over, so I got a speeding ticket on the way.

My father never fully forgave the theft of his car, although as the months passed and his dementia(痴呆) worsened. One reason my father had been so eager to keep driving was that his younger brother Wes lived in a county home. Wes had been born mentally challenged(智障) and later suffered from schizophrenia(精神分裂), my father had driven monthly to see him. It seemed right to help them see each other. So, seven years ago, Jim and I borrowed a van(货车) equipped for a wheelchair ,picked up Wes and took him for Thanksgiving with my father.

At my father’s place, we moved Wes in his chair out of the van and up to the door. When the brothers saw each other, their faces lit up.

“Is that you, bud?” Wes called out, half rising from his seat.

“Wes!”My father cried. They grasped each other’s hands firmly, smiled at each other, their joy obvious.

Slowly, we made our way back to my father’s apartment; my husband walked alongside my father while I pushed Wes in his chair. That was last time my father saw his brother. Wes passed away a few months later. My father continued to worsen.

That was our last Thanksgiving together. He died in 2011, a few months shy of his 96th birthday. That means there will be no car tricks this year, no wheelchair van and there will never again be multiple generations of our family at the same table. 60. The writer stole his father’s car because ______. A. she couldn’t afford a car herself B. an accident once happened to her father

C. she was concerned about her father’s safety D. her father was too old to drive his car

61. Father kept driving without a license because ______. A. He didn’t care about it B. He had forgotten he didn’t have a license

C. He wanted to see his brother monthly D. He wanted to show he was still young

62. The underlined word “relinquish” (in the 3rd Paragraph) probably means “______”. A. give up B. look for C. pick up D. pay for

63. Which of the following words can describe the writer? A. Stubborn. B. Considerate. C. Bad-tempered. D. Casual.
