When I was 12, I believed honest should always be rewarded. One afternoon, I was playing football with my companions while accidentally I kicked the ball through a nearby apartment’s window. The crashing
sound was followed by kids running from all directions hurriedly screamed, “Run! No one will tell.” Instead of running away, I went to the apartment owner without hesitation expecting praise for being honest, so he laughed, saying, “I’ve never seen a kid inform against himself. What silly boy!” I felt bad hurt. When I got home, my mother said, “Remember:regardless of that he said, pride in you will always be your reward.” This is an experience I will never forget it.

18. One of the greatest contributions to the first Oxford English Dictionary was also one of its most unusual. In 1879, Oxford University in England asked Prof. James Murray to serve as editor for what was to be the most ambitious dictionary in the history of the English language. It would include every English word possible and would give not only the definition but also the history of the word and quotations (引文)showing how it was used.
This was a huge task. So Murrary had to find volunteers from Britain, the United States, and the
British colonies to search every newspaper, magazine, and book ever written in English. Hundreds of volunteers responded, including William Chester Minor. Dr. Minor was an American Surgeon who had served in the Civil War and was now living in England. He gave his address as “Broadmoor, Crowthorne, Berkshire,”” 50 miles from Oxford.
Minor joined the army of volunteers sending words and quotations to Murray. Over the next years, he became one of the staff’s most valued contributors.
But he was also a mystery. In spite of many invitations, he would always decline to visit Oxford. So in 17, Murray finally decided to travel to Crowthorne himself. When he arrived, he found Minor locked in a book-lined cell at the Broadmoor Asylum for the Criminally insane.
Murray and Minor became friends, sharing their love of words. Minor continued contributing to the dictionary, sending in more than 10,000 submissions in 20 years. Murray continued to visit Minor regularly, sometimes taking walks with him around the asylum grounds.
In 1910, Minor left Broadmoor for an asylum in his native America. Murray was at the port to wave goodbye to his remarkable friend.

The Winner’s Guide to Success
How do successful people think? What helps them to make success? To find out the answers, an American scholar recently visited some of the most successful people in America. 51 Be responsible for yourself
Sometimes you may want to blame others for your failure to get ahead. 52 You’re saying, “You have more control over my life than I do.” Live life “on purpose”
Almost all successful people live life “on purpose”— they are doing what they believe they should and want to do. When you live your life on purpose, you’ll try your best to do your job or study as well as you can. You love what you do and you can find pleasure in what you do. Write a plan
It is very difficult trying to get what you want without a good plan. 53 A good plan is like a map to you. Without this “map”, you may waste your time, money and also your energy; while with the “map” you’ll enjoy the “trip” and get what you want in the shortest possible time. Be willing to pay the price
Nothing great is easy to get. So you must be ready to work hard — even harder than you have ever done. If you are not willing to pay the price, you won’t get anything valuable. Never give up
When you are doing something, you must tell yourself again and again: Giving up is worse than failure because failure can be the mother of success, but giving up means the death of hope.

Once an American writer was writing a novel. He could not have a good ending for his book until one night when he had a very good idea. His book was left without a perfect ending. So remember, do what you can right away. Never delay at all.
A. In fact, when you say someone or something outside of yourself is stopping you from making success, you’re giving away your own power.
B. It is just like trying to drive through strange roads to a city far away.
C. Some people achieve success much later in life because they fail to realize earlier the importance of hard work.
