Stephen Hawking was born in Oxford, Englandon 8th January, 1942. He went to school in St Allbans, a small city near London.Although he did well, he was never top of his class.

After leaving school. Hawking went first toOxford University where he studied physics and then went to Cambridge Universitywhere he studied cosmology, I had been very bored with life. Therehad not seemed to be anything worth doing. But shortly after I came out of hospital,I suddenly

In an unmanned supermarket, a customer waitsto pay. With the use of advanced digital payment technology, including biologicalrecognition and in-depth learning, the man leaves in a minute. There’s no cashierin the store. At a large university, students use a hand-scanning machine that authorizestheir entry into the gym. Those people are using “smart machines” whichidentify people by their physical characteristics. These new devices use fingers, hands, faces, eyes and voices. Some machines may even use smells. This new technology, called biometrics, gets information from parts of the body.

In the past, biometric machines were used mainlyin government agencies or in prisons. But now that the cost of the technology islower, these machines are starting to be used everywhere, from border services toschools.

Some people, however, are concerned that thesemachines will mean the destruction of personal privacy. They worry that the machineswill get personal information about them, know it seems like these machines areinvading our privacy, but actually, biometric machines help to protect it,”says Jay Tarkett, who works at a company that develops the machines, “Theycan be used instead of passwords on a computer, for example. They can also identifycriminals at airports. So, really, they help to promote public safety, and all theinformation stored is kept confidential by the machine itself.”

Some people don’t like the idea of using fingerprintsbecause they associate them with criminals, and feel like they are being accusedof

something, In addition, they don’t work for some people, such as bricklayers, who wear down their fingerprints. Yet, face recognition does work well because thesubject doesn’t really have to do anything, To cash a check at a bank, for example, the customer has to do nothing more than look at a machine similar to an automaticteller. If the face matches the picture kept on file, the customer gets the moneywith no problems, The need to carry identification with you from place to place, then, would all but cease. It has been found that the hand scan works well ill thecollege gym. Before this machine was used, students at the college entered the gymusing cards similar to credit cards. The problem was that students often lost orforgot their cards. With the hand-scanning machine, however, the problem was solvedright away.

But the machines are still new, and there canbe problems. For example, voice recognition works on the phone, but it is not precise, and can be tricked. Another constraintwe notice;, with machines that use face recognitionin particular, is that they can be fooled if people color their hair or gain a lotof weight. However, this particular problem may be solved by a new type of technologythat scans a person’s iris, the colored part of the eye. It can even identify theperson from a few feet away, recognizing a customer as he or she approaches theATM.

(1)What’s the author’s intention by presenting two examples in Paragraph 1?

A . To bring in the topic of the passage.B . To stress how smart machines work.C . To show the popularity of smart machines.D . To introduce the

convenience smart machines offer.

(2)What is the author’s attitude towards the new technology? A . Bitter.B . Worried.C . Satisfied.D . Optimistic. (3)What is the passage mainly about?

A . An introduction to biometric machines.B . An advertisement for biometric machines.C . A brief description of hand scanning machines.D . An analysis of biometric machines’ value in economy.

The fence was long and high. He put thebrush into the whitewash and moved it along the top of the fence. He repeated theoperation. He felt he could not continue and sat down.

He knew that his friends would arrive soon withall kinds of interesting plans for the day. They would walk past him and laugh. They would make jokes about his having to work on a beautiful summer Saturday. Thethought burned him like fire.

He put his hand into his pockets and took outall that he owned. Perhaps he could find some way to pay someone to do the whitewashingfor him. But there was nothing of value in his pockets-nothing that could buy evenhalf an hour of freedom. So he put the bits of toys back into his pockets and gaveup the idea.

At this dark and hopeless moment, a wonderfulidea came to him. It filled his mind with a great, bright light. Calmly he pickedup the brush and started again to whitewash.

While Tom was working, Ben Rogers appeared.Ben was eating an apple as he walked along the street. As he walked along it, hewas making noises like the sound of a riverboat. First he shouted loudly, like aboat captain. Then he said “Ding—Dong-Dong”, “Ding—Dong— Dong”again and again, like the bell of a riverboat. And he made other strange noises. When he came close to Tom, he stopped.

Tom went on whitewashing. He did not look atBen. Ben stared a moment and then said: “Hello! I’m going swimming, but youcan’t go, can you? “

No answer. Tom moved his brush carefully alongthe fence and looked at the result with the eye of an artist. Ben came nearer. Tom’smouth watered for the apple, but he kept on working.

Ben said, “Hello, old fellow, you’ve gotto work, hey?”

Tom turned suddenly and said, “Why, it’syou, Ben! I wasn’t noticing.” “Say—I’m going swimming. Don’t you wishyou could? But of course you’d rather work—wouldn’t you? Of course you would.”

Tom looked at the boy a bit, and said, “Whatdo you call work?” “Why, isn’t that work?”

Tom went back to his whitewashing, and answeredcarelessly.

“Well, maybe it is, and maybe it isn’t.All I know is, it suits Tom Sawyer.” “Oh come, now, you don’t mean to say thatyou like it? The brush continued to move.

“Like it? Well, I don’t see why I shouldn’tlike it. Does a boy get a chance to whitewash a fence every day?”

Ben stopped eating his apple. Tom moved hisbrush back and forth, stepped back to look at the result, added a touch here andthere, and stepped back again. Ben watched every move and got more and more interested.Soon he said, “Say, Tom, let me whitewash a little.”

Tom thought for a moment, and was about to agree, but he changed his mind.

“No-no-it won’t do, Ben. You see, AuntPolly wants this fence to be perfect. It has got to be done very carefully. I don’tthink there is one boy in a thousand, maybe two thousand, that can do it well enough.”

“No——is that so? Oh come, now——let me justtry. Only just a little.” “Ben, I’d like to, but if it isn’t doneright, I’m afraid Aunt Polly …” “Oh, I’ll be careful. Now let me try. Say—I’llgive you the core of my apple.”

“Well, here—No, Ben, now don’t. I’m afraid…” “I’ll give you all of it.”

Tom gave up the brush with unwillingness onhis face, but joy in his heart. And while Ben worked at the fence in the hot sun,Tom sat under a tree, eating the apple, and planning how to get more help. Therewere enough boys. Each one came to laugh, but remained to whitewash. By the timeBen was tired, Tom sold the next chance to Billy for a kite; and when Billy wastired, Johnny bought it for a dead rat——and so on, hour after hour. And when themiddle of the afternoon came, Tom had won many treasures.

And he had not worked. He had had a nice idletime all the time, with

plenty of company, and the fence had been whitewashed threetimes. If he hadn’t run out of whitewash, Tom would have owned everything belongingto his friends.

He had discovered a great law of human action, namely, that in order to make a man or a boy want a thing, it is only necessaryto make the thing difficult to get.
