《The Origin of Qingming Festival》
Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day, is a traditional Chinese festival that falls on the 15th day after the Spring Equinox. It is a time for people to pay respect to their ancestors and remember the departed.
The origin of Qingming Festival can be traced back to over 2,500 years ago during the Spring and Autumn Period of Chinese history. It is said that a loyal follower of Duke Wen of Jin, Jie Zitui, was so devoted to the duke that he followed him even when he was forced to go into exile. During their time in the mountains, Jie Zitui was known for his selfless dedication and assistance, often providing Duke Wen with food and shelter. However, when Duke Wen ascended to the throne, he forgot about Jie Zitui's sacrifice and loyal service. It wasn't until 19 years later, when he remembered Jie Zitui and felt remorseful, that he sought out to reward him.
Tragically, he found out that Jie Zitui had stayed loyal until the end and died in the mountains. To honor Jie Zitui's loyalty and
sacrifice, Duke Wen ordered that a day be set aside in memory of him.
On this day, people were encouraged to honor their ancestors and deceased loved ones by visiting their graves, making offerings of food and burning incense. This practice has continued into the present day, where the festival is still observed with grave sweeping and paying respects to ancestors.
In addition to tomb-sweeping activities, Qingming Festival is also
a time for outdoor activities such as flying kites and enjoying the arrival of spring. It is a time for families to come together, enjoy the beauty of nature, and honor the memories of their ancestors.
