One day, a slave owner entered a local store and threatened a young boy who was his slave. At first, the slave refused to move and ran for the door. The slave owner reached for a heavy weight. He threw it at his slave. Instead, it hit Harriet on the head. Harriet almost died. For the rest of her life, she carried the mark of a deep wound on her head.
Miser Brodas felt he never needed Harriet. He decided to sell her. Harriet thought of a way to prevent this. Each time she was shown to someone who might buy her, she acted as if she were falling asleep. After a while, Mister Brodas gave up the hope of selling Harriet. He sent her back to the fields. At 24 she married a free black man, John Tubman. By then, Harriet was sure she should escape.
In 1849, Mister Brodas died. His slaves probably would be sold to further South. John Tubman tried to make Harriet forget about running away. Harriet decided she

Don't you just love ice skating every winter? I am sure, that since winter is approaching, your skates are set to e out, just waiting to be used. Impress your friends with your new trick on how to ice -skate backwards with the help of these tips. Skating backwards on ice is a bit difficult but once you master the basic, there' s nothing like it. Follow the steps given below and you will be able to skate backwards in no time. Stand Straight
The first thing that you need to do is, stand straight. If you feel that you are falling backwards, then just put your chin up and slightly bend your knees. Don't worry; this happens to all. Confidence is What You Need
The most important step while learning how to skate backwards, is having
实用文档
enough confidence in yourself and in what you are doing. How can you achieve this? By practice. Just practice rolling backwards down a gentle slop every single day or just by pushing off from a wall or something of that sort. But before you do that, make sure that the place where you are practicing is free from any kind of debris (碎片) because otherwise, you could end up in the hospital due to some accident. While going backwards, just get used to the feeling of moving backwards. One of the important ice skating tips and techniques is that if you feel that you are losing your balance, then scissor (做剪式运动) your skates. Keep practicing this till you are confident about it. Maintain Speed
Confident now? Great! Now the next step is to maintain your speed. While rolling in a straight line with one skate, with the other try sculling (滑浆), that is, keep pushing yourself backwards with an outwards stroke (滑动). Now bring the skate which you were using to scull, and then again, repeat the same process. Make sure that you put most of your weight on the skate which is moving straight and not the one with which you are sculling. Now, try the same thing using the other foot. Again keep doing this till you are confident enough. Increase Your Speed Now
Once you are confident that you can scull with either foot, the next thing that you have to do is increase your speed. Try some of your own tricks now. Scull with either foot or with both at the same time. Scull and Be Aware
While you keep one foot straight, keep sculling with the other. You can do that simultaneously (同时,一起) with both feet. Concentrate on what you are doing but don't get so involved that you don't see where you are going. If you are not watching your back, you might just bang against something or someone. 59. According to the text confidence es from ______ . A. constant exercise B. strict coaches C. high speed D. good

Baby girls make their way directly for dolls as soon as they can crawl(爬), while boys will head for the toy cars, a study has shown. The findings, the first to show differences in very young babies, suggest there is a biological basis to their preferences.
Psychologists Dr Brenda Todd from City University London carried out an experiment involving 90 infants aged nine months to 36 months. The babies were allowed to choose from seven toys. Some were stereotypically boys' toys - a car, a digger, a ball and a blue teddy. The rest were girls’ toys: a pink teddy, a doll and a cooking set. They were placed a meter away from the toys, and could pick whichever toy they liked. Their choice and the amount of time they spent playing with each toy were recorded.
Of the youngest children (nine to 14 months), girls spent significantly longer playing with the doll than boys, and boys spent much more time with the car and ball than the girls did. Among the two-and three-year-olds, girls spent 50 percent of the time playing with the doll while only two boys briefly touched it. The boys spent almost 90 percent of their time playing with cars, which the girls barely touched. There was no link between the parents’ view on which toys were more appropriate for boys or girls, and the children’s choice.
Dr Brenda Todd said: “Children of this age are already exposed to much socialization. Boys may be given ‘toys that go’ while girls get toys they can care for, which may help shape their preference. But these findings agree with the former idea that children show natural interests in particular kinds of toys. There could be a biological basis for their choices. Males through evolution have been adapted to prefer moving objects, probably through hunting instincts(本能), while girls prefer warmer colors such as pink, the color of a newborn baby.”
63. Baby boys and girls have different toy preferences probably because . A. baby boys are much more active B. baby girls like bright
colors more
C. there is a natural difference between them D. their parents treat them
differently
64. What can we infer from Paragraph 3 ?
A. Nine-month-old baby boys don’t play with dolls at all.
B. Two-year-old baby girls sometimes play with cars and balls. C. Parents should teach their babies to share each other’s toys. D. The older the babies are, the more obvious their preference is.
65. What conclusion did Dr. Brenda Todd draw from the results of the study?

A. Babies’ preference isn’t affected by social surroundings. B. Adults purposely influence their babies’ preference.
C. Baby boys preferring to moving toys will be good at hunting. D. Baby girls preferring warmer colors will be warm-hearted. 66. We may read this article in a section of a newspaper. A. health B. science C. education D. entertainment

I had an experience once which taught me something about the ways people make a bad situation worse by blaming themselves. One January, I officiated (主持) at two funerals for two elderly women. Both died a natural death. At the first home, the son of the deceased (已故的) woman said, “If only I had sent my mother to Florida and gotten her out of this cold and snow, she would be alive today. It’s my fault that she died.” At the second home, the son said, “If only I hadn’t insisted on her going to Florida, she would be alive today. That long airplane ride was more than she could take. It’s my fault.”
When things don’t turn out as we would like them to, we tend to think that had we done things differently, the story would have had a happier ending. Any time there is a death, the survivors will feel guilty. Because the course of action they took turned out bad, they believed that the opposite course, for example, keeping Mother at home, would have turned out better. After all, how could it have turned out any worse?
There seem to be two elements involved in our readiness to feel guilty. The first lies in our belief that the world makes sense and that there is a reason for everything that happens.
The second is the thought that we are the cause of what happens, especially the bad things that happens. The roots of this feeling may lie in our childhood. A baby es to think that the world exists to meet his needs, and that he makes everything happen in it. He wakes up in the morning and calls the rest of the world to its tasks. He cries, and someone es to attend to him. When he is hungry, people feed him, and when he is wet, people change him. Very often, we do not pletely give up that childish thought that our wishes cause things to happen.
67. What is true about the two deceased elderly women?
A. They died due to lack of care by family members. B. They died from hard work.
C. They weren’t used to the change in life. D. They both died of old age.
68. People feel guilty for the deaths of their loved ones because . A. they cannot find a better way to express their sorrow B. they don’t know the natural course of events
C. they believe that they are responsible for what has happened D. they don’t know things often turn out in the opposite direction 69. The underlined word “they ” in Paragraph 2 probably refers to . 实用文档
A. the things B. the stories C. the opposite D. the survivors 70. People have believed since early childhood that . A. their wishes are the cause of everything that happens B. life and death is an unsolved mystery C. every story should have a happy ending D. everybody must obey their demand
How we look and how we appear to others probably worries us more when we are in our teens or early twenties than at any other time in our life. Few of us are content to accept ourselves as we are, and few are brave enough to ignore the trends of fashion. Most fashion magazines or TV advertisements try to persuade us that we should dress in a certain way or behave in a certain manner. If we do, they tell us, we will be able to meet new people with confidence and deal with every situation confidently and without embarrassment. Changing fashion, of course, does not apply just to dress. A barber today does not cut a boy’s hair in the same way as he used to, and girls do not make up in the same way as their mothers and grandmothers did. The advertisers show us the latest fashionable styles and we are constantly under pressure to follow the fashion in case our friends think we are odd or dull.
What causes fashions to change? Sometimes convenience or practical necessity or just the fancy of an influential person can establish a fashion. Take hats for example. In cold climates, early buildings were cold inside, so people wore hats indoors as well as outside. In recent times, the late President Kennedy caused a depression in the American hat industry by not wearing hats, and more American men followed his example.
There is also a cyclical(周期性的) pattern in fashion. In the 1920s in Europe and America, short skirts became fashionable. After World War II, they dropped to ankle length. Then they got shorter and shorter until the miniskirt was in fashion. After a few more years, skirts became longer again.
Today, society is much freer and easier than it used to be. It is no longer necessary to dress like everyone else. Within reason, you can dress as you like or do your hair the way you like instead of the way you should because it is the fashion. The popularity of jeans and the “untidy” look seems to be a reaction against the increasingly expensive fashion of the top fashion houses.
At the same time, appearance is still important in certain circumstances and then we must choose our clothes carefully. It would be foolish to go to an interview for a job in a

Nowadays, many students get together to discuss about what kind of teachers they like or dislike best.
For most students, they like the teachers who are quite learned, cool, talkative and humorous. They also admire those who love teaching and are strict in their work. If teachers love their students and are always ready to help them, students will most admire them. What’s more, among popular teachers are the ones who are fond of municating with students and know what their favorites are.
As far as I’m concerned, I love teachers who are sports fans because I like playing basketball badly and I’m on the school team as a top player for two years. Were a teacher an excellent basketball player, we would be good friends by playing games

M: Not English anyway. Just open it. There may be a surprise waiting for you. W: Alright.
M: Wow! What’s this?
W: Oh, now I remember. This is a package from a Dutch friend of mine I met on the Internet. It’s chocolate!
M: Oh, I’ve got the picture here. So this is basically Dutch chocolate? What’s so special? W: It’s actually more special than you think. M: Really?
W: Yeah. Go get two glasses of milk. M: Alright, here you are.
W: We can put the chocolate in the milk and stir with a spoon. And the milk now bees chocolate milk.
M: Impressive. Text 9
W: Wele back to the Friday Night Jazz Hour. I’m your host, Melinda. Joining me tonight is Michael from a local jazz band. M: Hello, everyone.
W: Tell us about your musical background.
M: Well, I play drums in a jazz band. I can play many different instruments though. W: Really? Like guitar?
M: Yes, I can play guitar, drums, bass, and even some piano.
W: Interesting. Your band has been attracting a lot of attention lately. M: Really? Well, I hope so.
W: Do you have any shows ing up?
M: Yes, my band will play a live show this weekend at the VA Bar in Beijing. The show will start at 9:00 p.m. and we will play for no more than two hours. All the listeners are invited for a night of jazz music!
W: What is “jazz” music?
M: Jazz is originally from America. It was made popular by black musicians during the early 20th century. Jazz usually is more difficult to play and listen to than other forms of popular music. There is usually a piano, drums, bass, and then a guitar or sax. W: What is your favorite instrument?
M: I’ve been playing music for about 10 years and I have played many instruments. I think drums are my favorite though. I like to hit the drums and make a lot of loud but controlled noise. Drummers have to understand a lot about music so I think it is a good place for me. Text 10
What makes a good team? Let’s start by looking at a successful football team. Perhaps the

biggest name in football in the world is Manchester United. Manchester United is an extremely successful football team, having played a major role in English football during the 90s and early xxs. They have global support and are also a highly successful business. So what makes them as successful as a team? It’s true that they are able to attract and afford some of the best players in the world. Many footballers dream of playing for such teams. However, buying the best players does not guarantee the best team. You need the right ingredients in the right mix to create a recipe for success. You need fast skillful players, hard physical players, and defenders as well as attacking players. A good team should be a mix of experienced players and young players. Young players benefit from the experience of the older team members.
This concept transfers to other fields as well. The best teams are not necessarily the ones made up of the brightest, cleverest individuals. A balance of skills, abilities and personalities is usually needed to make the team effective. Having the right mix of skills and qualities in the team is not the end of the story — someone has to pull it all together and make it work properly, i.e. someone has to be a leader and give the team direction.
