DEAR READERS,

Happy birthday to us! TIME magazine's first issue came out on March 3, 1923. Sure, 98 isn't the most special birthday, compared with the 100th birthday. But we take every chance to celebrate. TIME for Kids came along just a little bit later, in 1995. Soon, we will have our 26th birthday!

We have run our Kid Reporter program for many years. Many kids who took part in the program as a reporter are professional journalists now. While they were working with TFK, they caught some great chances, like interviewing famous people, players, scientists, and more.

Do you dream of being a reporter? Come and join us! On March 15, we will hold our annual competition to find our next group of TIME for Kids Reporters. Editors from TFK will choose 10 best students.

World Book Day is celebrated on April 23 in most countries, but in the UK, it is usually in March. This year, our school invited a writer to talk to us about her life.

The writer's name is Jo Cotterill. She is an English writer who lives in Oxfordshire with her husband and daughters. She has won many awards for writing books for children and teenagers.

In her speech, Cotterill told us a lot about her childhood, as well as her love for unicorns, her previous job as an actress and, of course, her books.

1 2

She also showed us some of her award-winning books and described her passages for us. I was fascinated by her book A Library of Lemons. It is a story about a girl, Calypso, whose father stops believing in friendship and love after his wife dies. All he believes in are books — he teaches his daughter to close her heart and only love books as well.

As you can see from the book's title, Cotterill likes to play with words and invent new titles for her books. In fact, her writing career started with creative titles. She said that sometimes she would read in bed on a Sunday and think about interesting titles for new books. She has another book called A Storm of Strawberries. Do you think this title is creative? I simply loved Cotterill's talk. It inspired me to pick up my pen again and keep writing.

Storytelling has caught the human imagination for thousands of years. People everywhere have told stories to amuse, to teach, to remember, and just to pass the time. People started telling stories long before writing was invented. ______36 But people all over the world still tell one another stories out loud. A person who can tell a good story nearly always finds listeners.

Before people developed writing, storytelling was the most important way to pass along information. Anything a culture wanted to protect—its beliefs, its history, and its traditions — had to be told out loud. Each generation would tell the culture's stories to the next. ______37 Knowledge passed on in this method is called the spoken tradition. Even cultures that know how to write still pass along some information in this way.

______38 In other cultures only special storytellers were trusted to do this important job. A culture's best storytellers had good memories. They could also make the stories very interesting, so people would listen to and remember them. Sometimes people would sing the stories or tell them in the form of poems. ______39

However, stories told aloud change over time as different people tell them. A storyteller might change a story in order to make it better. Or a teller may simply not remember all the details of a story. Unlike written stories, the spoken tradition is not created by any one person. ______40 Sometimes the stories are collected and written down long after they have been created.
