完型填空 第六单元

The medicines the doctor prescribed for me tasted horrible. They were supposed to bring down my temperature, but when I heard how high it was I was terrified. I thought I was certain to die. I just didn’t

see how I could possibly overcome the illness. I couldn’t stop worrying about it. All day I just gazed into space, feeling miserable. The fever made me shiver and gave my face a flush. I couldn’t take an interest in anything and felt very detached from everything around me. I thought my father must know I was going to die, but had said nothing, wanting me to keep from thinking about it. Finally I could bear it no longer and asked him how much longer I could live. When he explained my mistake, all my worries slid away. Only then was I really able to take it easy. 2.“Fire! Fire!” what terrible words to hear when one wakes up in a strange house in the middle of night! It was a large, wooden house and my room was on the top floor. I jumped out of bed, opened the door and stepped out into the passage. It was full of thick smoke. I began to run, but as I was only half-awake, instead of going towards the stairs I went in the opposite direction. The smoke grew thicker and I could see flames all around. The floor became hot under my bare feet. I found an open door and ran into a room to get to the window. But before I could reach it, one of my feet caught in something soft and I fell down. The thing I had fallen over felt like a bundle of clothes, and I picked it up to protect my face from the smoke and heat. Just then the floor gave away under me and I crashed to the floor below with pieces of burning wood all around me. I was a flaming doorway in front, put the bundle over my face and ran. My feet burned me terribly, but I got through. When I reached the cold air outside, my bundle of clothes suddenly gave a thin cry. I nearly dropped it in my surprise. Then I saw a crowd gathered in the street. A woman in a nightdress and borrowed man’s coat screamed as she saw me and came running madly.

“My baby! My baby!” she cried. The crowd cheered wildly as she took the smoke-blackened bundle out of my arms. I had some difficulty recognizing her. She was the Mayor’s wife, and I had saved her baby, I was a hero. 第8单元:

Many people are hostile to daydreaming, believing

that it can interfere with the pursuit of success. They consider that daydreamers will never amount to much in their chosen careers. Recently, however, some experts have begun to argue that indulging in fantasy can have positive benefits. Daydreaming of success, they claim, can contribute to success. One technique they recommend is to picture yourself as you wish to be. Holding this vision clearly in your mind supposedly helps you make it come true. Of course, you should not neglect necessary study or work because daydreaming cannot substitute for hard work. Merely relying on daydreaming will not help you attain your goal.

You are sitting in a classroom on a warm day, listening to a history lecture. But the windows are open, and outdoors the birds are singing and the trees are budding. The urge to gaze out of the window is irresistible, and you think of what it would be like to be out there, sitting in the grass, relaxing, chatting with a friend in the sunlight… Then the professor stops her discussion of the Roman Empire to say,” Mr. Smith, just what is so interesting out of the window? Suddenly you are startled back to reality. Only what is it, exactly, that you have come back from? It was not exactly that there was a specific thing out of the window that interested you. Rather, the mood of the spring day set you off into daydreaming. Daydreaming and fantasy are not quite the same. Fantasy is more self-directed(the “if I were…” or “if I could…” kind of thinking). In a daydream, your thoughts wander unconsciously in unexpected directions. 第九单元:

The beauty of the music was in sharp contrast with the reality of the lives led by the singers. Amid all their suffering, a group of Jewish prisoners had found the courage to stage performance of Verdi’s Requiem. Despite the difficulties and dangers, they threw themselves enthusiastically into rehearsals, which had to be kept a secret. An additional difficulty was that they had only one instrument, an old harmonium. Their greatest triumph came when they performed before an audience containing the infamous Nazi official, Adolf Eichmann. Their voices swelled with passion as they threw in the faces of the Nazis words which sang of how they would have to pay for their crimes.

The following is an eyewitness report by a German of how a comparatively minor mass execution was carried out upon Hitler’s order at Dubno in the Ukraine on October5,1942.

The people who had got off the tuck-men, women and children of all ages-were ordered to undress themselves by an SS man, who carried a dog whip. They had to put down their clothes in fixed places. Without screaming or weeping these people undressed, stood around in family groups, kissed each other, said farewells and waited for a sign from another SS man, who stood near a small hill, also with a whip in his hand. During the fifteen minutes that I stood there I heard no complaint or plea for mercy…

An old woman with snow-white hair was holding a one-year-old child in her arms and singing to it. The child was smiling with delight. The parents were looking on with tears in their eyes. At that moment the SS man near the hill counted off about twenty persons and instructed them to go behind it. Then from there I heard rifle shots in quick succession.

A few minutes later I walked around the hill and found myself confronted by a tremendous grave-an execution pit. People were closely wedged together and lying on top of each other. Nearly all had blood running over their shoulders from their heads. Some of them were still moving. Some were lifting their arms and turning their heads to show that they were still alive. The pit was already two-thirds full. I estimated that it contained about a thousand people. I looked for the Fascist soldier who did the shooting. He was an SS man, who sat at the edge of the pit, his feet dangling into the pit. He had a gun on his knees and was smoking a cigarette. 第十单元:

If we look at the process of innovation, we will see how technology feeds on itself, accelerating the pace of technological advance in our own times.

Technological innovation is comprised of three stages:

invention, application and diffusion. One of the most important characteristics of advanced technology today is the fantastic speed that occurs between each of these stages. For example, nowadays the time it takes to put ideas to work has been greatly reduced. The progress in transportation is a case in point. Likewise , the time between the application and diffusion stages has been radically shortened. This accounts for the acceleration of present-day technology. And this, in turn, generates more feasible ideas.

What sort of future will this process conjure up for us? will the peace of change exceed our ability to cope with it? or is it one of four characteristics that we have an impressive ability to adapt to change, no matter how frequent?

Many of us have a vague feeling that things are mobbing faster. Doctors and executives often complain that they cannot keep up with the rapid developments in their field. Hardly a meeting or conference takes place today without some talk about “the challenge of change”. Among many people there is an uneasy mood- a suspicion that change is out of control.

Not everyone, however, shares this anxiety. For some people it seems as if nothing has changed since the 1930s, and as if nothing ever will. One sees them everywhere: old people, resigned to live out their years, attempting to avoid, at any cost, the intrusion of the new. People of thirty-five and forty-five, nervous about the student movement, sex, drug abuse, or miniskirts, feverishly attempting to persuade themselves that, after all, youth was always rebellious , and that what is happening today is no different from the past. Even among the young we find an incomprehension of change: students so ignorant of the past that they see nothing unusual about the present. The disturbing fact is that the great majority of people find the idea of change so threatening that they attempt to deny its existence. Even many people who understand intellectually that changes is accelerating do not take this critical social fact into account in planning their own personal lives.
