In English the sky is blue, and the grass is green. But in Vietnamese there is just one color category for both sky and grass:xanh. For decades cognitive(认识的) scientists have pointed to such examples as evidence that language largely determines how we see color. But new research with four-to-six-month-old babies indicates that long before we learn language,we see up to five basic categories of color—a finding that suggests a stronger biological element to perceive(感知) color than previously thought.
The study, published recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of USA,tested the color-discrimination abilities of more than 170 British babies.Researchers at the University of Sussex in England measured how long babies spent staring at color swatches,a system known as looking time.First babies were showed one swatch repeatedly until their looking time decreased—a sign they had grown bored with it.Then the researchers showed them a different sample and noted their reaction.Longer looking time was explained to mean the babies considered the second sample to be a new color.Their increasing responses showed that they distinguished among five colors:red, green, blue, purple and yellow.
“The finding suggests you come by nature to make color distinctions, but given your culture and language, certain distinctions may or may not be used,” explains lead author Alice Skelton,a doctoral student at Sussex.
“The study systematically explored babies’ color perception, revealing how we perceive colors before we have the words to describe them,”says Angela M.Brown,an experimental psychologist at the Ohio State University’s College of Optometry, who was not involved with the new research. The results add a new challenge to the long nature-versus-nurture debate and the so-called Sapir-Whorf hypothesis(假设)—the idea that the way we see the world is shaped by language.
In future work,Skelton and her colleagues are interested in testing babies from other cultures.“The way language and culture interact is a really interesting question,” she says.“We don’t know the exact systems yet,but we do know how we start off.”
4.What’s the finding of the new research? A.It clarifies what makes babies perceive colors. B.It proves human color recognition is inborn.
C.It finds how many colors babies can perceive. D.It shows the color culture is shaped by language.
根据第三段“The finding suggests you come by nature to make color distinctions...” 5.According to the new research,we can learn that . A.swatches affect babies in memory and attention B.longer looking time is based on psychology C.researchers determine babies’ color perception D.babies can tell the differences of some colors 答案 D
根据第二段最后一句“Their increasing responses showed that they distinguished among five colors:red, green, blue, purple and yellow.”
6.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A.A Rainbow in the Baby’s World B.A Journey to the World of Colors C.A New Challenge:Language vs.Culture D.Different Babies,Different Color Perception 答案 A

Are you always disturbed by the noise made by your co-workers while you’re working hard at your task? What kind of feelings will you have on hearing such noise?Have you ever got an idea that a certain helmet will help you out of the trouble so you can focus on your work at the office? Now,you needn’t worry, for the “Helmfon” will help you ignore noisy co-workers and other distractions(使人分心的事).
Created by Ukrainian design company Hochu Rayu, the Helmfon is a big helmet that uses special equipment to absorb the sound so as to completely block out any outside noise, giving the wearers their own quiet personal space so they can better focus their attention on their work.Made
of a glass fiber shell, membrane cloth and foamed polyethylene(泡沫聚乙烯),the helmet not only blocks outside sound, but it also keeps the noise you make in,allowing you to answer calls, hold Skype conferences, watch or edit videos, privately.
The company came up with the idea for the Helmfon after being asked to design a new phone booth for an IT company. The project made the team think about the way we communicate and finally begin working on a device(装置) that would allow you to be in two worlds just sitting on your chair in the office,at a meeting,or everywhere you feel like just wearing your helmet.
The Helmfon comes complete with a system board,a microphone, speakers, and a special holder for your phone. The only disadvantage is that it makes you look like a character from Mel Brooks’ famous Star Wars parody,Space Balls, but the company also made public a variety of great choices, including Batman-inspired design, and even a Native American headgear.
The Helmfon is still in prototype(雏形) stage, but the Ukrainian company is already working on a commercially possible design and plans to offer the design for sale.A release date has not yet been revealed.
7.Why does the author ask questions in Paragraph 1? A.To introduce the new device—the Helmfon. B.To ask readers’ opinions on noise at the office. C.To ask people not to make noises at the office. D.To introduce the noise trouble we’re facing. 答案 A
8.What is the function of the Helmfon? A.Protecting wearers’ safety.
B.Giving wearers a quiet personal space. C.Helping wearers talk secretly.
D.Preventing people from making noises.
根据第二段的“the Helmfon is a big helmet...giving the wearers their own quiet personal space so they can better focus their attention on their work”可知,Helmfon是一个大的头盔,它使用特殊的设备来吸收声音,给戴头盔者一个安静的个人空间,这样他们就可以更好地将注意力集中在工作上。故选B项。 9.What do the underlined words “The project” refer to? A.Holding a special phone meeting. B.Inventing a helmet everyone likes. C.Designing a device we can wear. D.Designing a new phone booth.
根据画线词所在句的上一句“The company came up with the idea for the Helmfon after being asked to design a new phone booth for an IT company.”
10.We can infer from the text that the Ukrainian company . A.is in need of a lot of money for the project B.has received lots of orders for the Helmfon C.hasn’t designed a fully successful helmet D.has begun to sell the helmet online 答案 C

The loss of handwriting in our high-tech world saddens me.People of all ages openly admit their handwriting is becoming worse as keyboards replace pen and paper.Increasingly, schoolchildren deal with assignments on computer and struggle to write, having had little practice.I
am of the generation that learnt to write with a dip pen in kindergarten and a fountain pen in high school;by the time I reached university, like everyone else,I used a functional ballpoint.Handwriting has filled every aspect of my life since I was first taught to shape letters on the lined pages of my exercise books.
From the age of 12,I have kept a handwritten journal, recording my thoughts and feelings regarding both the significant and boring aspects of my life.Through this daily practice I connected with myself, explored experiences and found a way to interpret and make sense of my relationships.Although I rarely reread my written material, the process of writing has remained with me as a means of processing my feelings and filtering(过滤) my experiences.
Yet today, handwritten letters are as rare as a red panda.Few of us write letters any longer, even to those to whom we are close. We communicate differently when we e-mail or text, both methods characterised by speed and informality. The deep thinking, which accompanied a handwritten letter,is almost entirely absent. We may be communicating more frequently and with more people, but the depth and quality of our communication has reduced.
Sadly, modern technology tends to be temporary.Few of us keep old e-mails or even print them out,so a sense of history and memory is lost.Archivists(档案管理者) report that more information has been lost in the past decade than in the previous 150 years. It is too easy to press the delete button.
In many other areas of records, material is now in the digital format.Yet saving material in a digital format only is extremely unstable. How it will survive the future remains a problem.
In this digital world of text,e-mails and instant messaging, the perceived value of writing is no longer obvious and the case for retaining the practice of writing needs to be made.Should we save the humble pen and paper when laptops and mobiles are functional, universal and unstoppable?Should children continue to be taught to write with a pen and paper?
With its passing,a good mode of self-expression is being lost.I invite readers to engage with handwriting and become aware of this special skill that has created civilization for centuries.
