Being a polite airline passenger starts with just a few easy steps. Help your fellow traveler

While you're loading your carry-on bag into the overhead space, offer to lift a fellow passenger's up there, too. Not only is it kind, but it could make the boarding process more efficient for everyone else. Keep your personal things well, personal

It's important to be mindful of your personal belongings. Avoid hitting other passengers with your bag, as you walk down the aisles(过道), by keeping it in front of you and close to your body. And once you sit down, you should stay there, and make sure you have everything you will need for the flight once you settle in your seat. Reaching over other passengers to access the overhead storage during the flight is uncomfortable for everyone. Respect your (limited) space

In the narrow space of an airplane, maintaining your personal space will go a long way towards making a smoother ride for everyone. Let the middle-seat passenger use the armrests (it's the least you can do), and keep your legs within the width of the chair frame. Be willing to swap seats with a family

Airlines sometimes reserve certain seats for special passengers or charge extra fees for adjacent(毗连的) ones, making it tough for family members to buy seats together. If you're traveling alone, offer to switch seats so that a family can sit beside each other; it's a kind gesture that they won't forget. But be sure to delay swapping until the plane has reached the safe altitude,as switching seats while everyone is boarding can be an inconvenience for those standing in the walkways.

21.To be a polite airline passenger, you need to do the following except________________. A.lending a helping hand to your travelling companion B.using the armrests to support your arms if you want C.avoiding reaching over others to open the overhead storage D.keeping your bag in front of you while walking down the aisles

22.If a man wants to swap the seat with you, you should__________________. A.charge extra fees for offering adjacent seats B.ask him to reserve the seat online in advance C.offer your seat and stand in the walkways D.put off swapping unless it is safe enough 23.Where can you most probably find the text? A.In a daily newspaper. C.In an airport guidebook. 【答案】21.B22.D23.C

根据第四段“Let the middleseat passenger use the armrests (it's the least you can do),” 让坐在中间的乘客使用扶手(这是你至少可以做的),可知,并不是要乘客随意使用扶手,所以B项是错误的。故选B项。

根据最后一段“If you're traveling alone, offer to switch seats so that a family can sit beside each other; it's a kind gesture that they won't forget. But be sure to delay swapping until the plane has reached the safe altitude,”如果你独自旅行,主动交换座位,这样一家人就可以坐在一起;这是一个他们不会忘记的友好的姿态。

从第一句话“Being a polite airline passenger starts with just a few easy steps.”

they could not say our languages. It was when I got familiar with the work that I got my golden retriever puppy (金毛寻回犬), whom I named Angel. As she matured and went through obedience training, I realized that she would be a good partner.

Angel is ten now and still works every week. As a rule, she visits two hospitals, a day care for the elderly, and our library’s PAWS for Reading program. Angel has also helped out at a children’s special-needs camp. She is so popular that everywhere we go people recognize her, especially the kids she has worked with.

We have seen some very special things through our pet therapy work. I brought Angel to our local hospital to visit a woman who was completely paralyzed (瘫痪的) on her right side from a stroke. One day, my husband, Jack asked her if she wanted to give Angel a treat. She nodded and gently took the treat, raised her right hand and started petting Angel. Her friend was in the room and said, “She hasn’t been able to move that hand since she had her stroke!”

Somehow it seems appropriate that when Angel visits the hospital, she also performs tricks for the patients with her paws. The best one is when she crouches on the floor and crosses her paws. She stays still and doesn’t move until Jack says “Best wishes”. It’s the best wishes for all the people Angel meets as well as for her. 24.Why does the author want to be a recorder? A.Pets cannot record themselves. C.Pets’ labor should be made aware of. 25.How is Angel’s work? A.Busy but rewarding. C.Funny and amusing.

B.Interesting but tiring. D.Important and demanding. B.Pets should be highly praised. D.Pets daily work is important.

26.What did Angel do for the paralyzed woman? A.She cured her disease. C.She gave her best wishes.

In recent times, vegetarianism has become more popular, but it is still not the best option for many. If you may be contemplating removing meat from your diet but do not want to go completely meat-free, perhaps try going meat-free for just one day a week.

Sharon Palmer, a registered dietitian and author of Plant Powered for Life, discusses how “research

consistently shows that plant based diets are linked with a lower risk of obesity, hypertension, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer”.

She says, “Even going meatless one day a week can make a difference, as you increase all of those whole plant-foods beans, wholegrains , nuts, seeds, vegetables, fruits-and decrease more animal foods, in particular red and processed meat. A high intake of these foods has been linked with increased disease risk.”

Deciding to have a more plant-based diet also increases your intake of fiber, vitamins healthy fats and

minerals. To help to do this, stocking your fridge with a variety of beans, seasonable veggies , wholegrains, herbs, nuts and seeds is Palmer’s secret to eating more plant-based meals.

Palmer’s other recommendation is “plantifying” your favorite dishes. “Just make your favorite entrees or meals plant-based, with a few swaps. If you love Taco Tuesday, make your tacos veggie by skipping the meat and serving black beans or a vegetarian mushroom with tofu filling. If you love Indian food, skip the chicken masala and have chickpea masala instead. These will be foods you already love and are familiar with.”

Her biggest advice is to pick one day a week to follow through this and mark it on your calendar. “I love the Meatless Monday idea because people often start their best behavior at the beginning of the week... However, there may be a better day of the week for you. So just plan it,” Palmer said.

28.What does the underlined words “contemplating” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean.? A.Stopping

B.Delaying

C.Resisting

D.Considering.

29.The writer mentions Sharon Palmer as a registered dietitian and author of a book probably because he wants his readers to______.

A.firmly believe Palmer’s advice C.buy Palmer’s popular book

B.better understanding Palmer’s theory D.know the popularity of Palmer’s advice.

30.To “plantify” your favorite dishes, you just________. A.try going meat-free one day a week B.stock your fridge with whole plant foods C.use vegetable filings, not meat for dumplings D.plan a meatless day of the week as you like. 31.How about Palmer’s advice according to the text? A.Theoretical

B.Practical

C.Boring

D.Unrealistic.

【答案】28.D29.A30.C31.B

根据划线单词后“removing meat from your diet but do not want to go completely meat-free, perhaps try going meat-free for just one day a week.”

Sharon Palmer, a registered dietitian and author of Plant Powered for Life,

discusses how “research consistently shows that plant based diets are linked with a lower risk of obesity, hypertension, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer”. 故选A。

根据倒数第二段“Just make your favorite entrees or meals plant-based, with a few swaps. If you love Taco Tuesday, make your tacos veggie by skipping the meat and serving black beans or a vegetarian mushroom with tofu filling. If you love Indian food, skip the chicken masala and have chickpea masala instead. These will be foods you already love and are familiar with.” 根据最后第一段“Her biggest advice is to pick one day a week to follow through this and mark it on your calendar. ”可知,她最大的建议是每周选择一天,以完成此操作并将其标记在您的日历上。由此可知,Palmer的建议比较实用。故选B。

【2021届湖北省宜昌市葛洲坝中学高三月考】

We talk continuously about how to make children more”resilient(有恢复力的)”,but whatever were doing, it's not working. Rates of anxiety disorders and depression are rising rapidly among teenagers. What are we doing wrong?

Nassim Taleb invented the word “antifragile” and used it to describe a small but very important class of systems that gain from shocks, challenges, and disorder. The immune system is one of them: it requires exposure to certain kinds of bacteria and potential allergens(过敏源)in childhood in order to develop to its full ability.

Children’s social and emotional abilities are as antifragile as their immune systems. If we overprotect kids and keep them “safe” from unpleasant social situations and negative emotions we deprive(剥夺)them of the challenges and opportunities for skill-building they need to grow strong. Such children are likely to suffer more when exposed later to other unpleasant but ordinary life events, such as teasing and social rejection

It's not the kids fault. In the UK, as in the US, parents became much more fearful in the 1980s and 1990s as cable TV and later the Internet exposed everyone, more and more, to those rare occurrences of crimes and accidents that now occur less and less, Outdoor play and independent mobility went down; screen time and

第页

12

adult-monitored activities went up.

Yet free play in which kids work out their own rules of engagement, take small risks, and learn to master small dangers turns out to be vital for the development of adult social and even physical competence, Depriving them of free play prevents their social-emotional growth. Norwegian play researchers Ellen Sandseter and Leif Kennair warned: “We may observe an increased anxiety or mental disorders in society if children are forbidden from participating in age adequate risky play.”

They wrote those words in 2011. Over the following few years, their prediction came true. Kids born after 1994 are suffering from much higher rates of anxiety disorders and depression than the previous generation did. Besides, there is also a rise in the rate at which teenage girls are admitted to hospital for deliberately harming themselves.

What can we do to change these trends? How can we raise kids strong enough to handle the ordinary and extraordinary challenges of life? We can’t guarantee that giving primary school children more independence today will bring down the rate of teenage suicide tomorrow. The links between childhood overprotection and teenage mental illness are suggestive but not clear-cut. Yet there are good reasons to suspect that by depriving our naturally antifragile kids of the wide range of experiences they need to become strong, we are systematically preventing their growth. We should let go-and let them grow. 32.Why does the author mention the immune system in Paragraph 2? A.To stress its importance C.To question the latest discovery.

B.To analyze the cause of anxiety D.To help understand a new word

33.Parents overprotect children because_______ A.they want to keep children from being teased B.they are concerned about their children's safety C.parent-monitored activities are a must D.children are not independent enough

34.According to the author, free play can_________ A.develop children' s leadership skills C.reduce children's risky behavior

B.strengthen children' s friendship D.promote children's resilience

35.Which of the following does the author probably agree with? A.Stop trying to perfect your child B.It takes great courage to raise children

C.Prepare the child for the road, not the road for the child.

D.While we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what life is all about. 【答案】32.D33.B34.D35.C

The immune system is one of them(免疫系统就是其中之一),此处说明免疫系统是前文提到的a small but very important class of systems(很小但很重要的系统)之一,也就是用来帮助读者理解“antifragile”这个新词,故选D。

根据第二段的we overprotect kids and keep them “safe” from unpleasant social situations and negative emotions(我们过度保护孩子,让他们远离不愉快的社会环境和负面情绪),由此可知,父母过分保护孩子,因为他们担心孩子的安全,故选B。

根据第五段的free play in which kids work out their own rules of engagement, take small risks, and learn to master small dangers turns out to be vital for the development of adult social and even physical competence(孩子们在自由玩耍中制定自己的参与规则,承担小的风险,并学会掌握小的危险,这对成人社交能力甚至身体能力的发展是至关重要的)由此可知,自由玩耍可以增强儿童的适应力。故选D。 35. We should let go-and let them grow.(我们应该放手,让他们成长。)

Many people become successful because they pay attention to the lessons that life teaches them.

36. However, by learning to deal with the challenges, one can come out of the experience, wiser, stronger and more able to face whatever else lies ahead.

Life lessons can occur in any area. Although we learn many things each day, we don’t always learn something that we feel will affect our behavior for the rest of our lives.37.It is usually something we are greatly changed by.

For example, if we respond in a certain way to something and then face unpleasant consequences, we’ll rethink how we handled the situation. This can serve as a life lesson so that when we’re faced with similar circumstances, we can consciously change our behavior. 38.

Such lessons in relationships are as varied and unique as each relationship, yet there are common themes.

39. Some of us learn a major life lesson when a loved one dies, and we wish we had spent more time with that person. This lesson can result in us spending more time with our remaining loved ones.

40. Since the lesson is learned through the consequences of our actions or reactions, in this way we can gain insight into how we think, act and react in certain situations. Perhaps one of the biggest lessons we can finally learn is that while we can’t control everything, we can control our response to things. A.Life lessons are unique to each person. B.Some of these lessons are learned the hard way.

C.This separates a life lesson from everything else we learn. D.Spending more time with loved ones is one of the examples. E. Life lessons can serve to help us understand ourselves better. F. One way to improve your life is to learn something new every day.

I stared at the hundreds of jigsaw puzzle(拼图)pieces spread out on the table. “This is going to take a while. ”

“Isn't that the point?” My 17-year-old daughter, Julia, said. “To keep us off the screens during the quarantine(隔离)?”

“Right,” I said.

“Maybe this will take my mind off everything I've lost,” Julia said. She was a senior in high school, missing the last weeks of school with her friends and teachers. A competition she'd worked for all school year was now canceled. There's uncertainty about her graduation ceremony. Next week, she'd celebrate her 18th birthday at home, unable to see her friends. But her biggest worry was for the college scholarship she'd applied for. With the university closed, the decision had been delayed. She couldn't choose which school to attend without knowing how much financial help she'd receive. Her whole future felt uncertain.

“I'm sorry, honey,” I said, picking up a puzzle piece. When I set it back down, I saw a drop of tear on the table. I looked at Julia's damp eyes and immediately put my arms around her, “Julia, you just have to believe it's going to work out. \"

“I feel like my whole life is like this puzzle. All the pieces are out of place and I may never get them back together,\" she said. “If just one piece would go into place, I think I could handle the uncertainty of the rest. I just need a piece of it. ”

I'd known since the quarantine started that Julia would struggle with it more than her sisters. Because of her age, but also because of her outgoing personality, staying home would be the hardest for her.

“I know it's hard when we can't see the future, but we have to believe in life. Despite the difficulties and setbacks, we'll figure out everything, just like the jigsaw puzzle,\"I held her hand and told her.

Two days after we completed our puzzle, we got the call.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Over the next several days, our family worked on the puzzle a little bit at a time. Finally, we were down to the final few puzzle pieces. As Julia put one into place, she said, \"Mom, when we started this puzzle, I also wondered how the pieces of my life would fit together. I still haven’t heard anything.” I sighed, “We have to just keep believing and keep waiting.”

Two days after we completed our puzzle, we got the call. Julia had been awarded a generous scholarship to one of her top choices. As she spoke to the university representative, I hugged her from behind, full of happy tears. When she got off the phone, she threw herself into my arms. “Thank you, Mom,” she cried. At this moment, our jigsaw puzzle is finished. Maybe Julia’s future-and everyone else’s-is still unknown. But we know that the power of belief is working it out, fitting the pieces of our lives together for good.
