Do \"Lucky Numbers\" Really Bring Good Luck?
Nowadays, people are fond of the so-called \"Lucky Numbers\". While choosing the telephone numbers or the car-plate numbers, they tend to choose such numbers as 8, 3, or 9, for they believe that these numbers will bring good luck to them. They will even not hesitate to pay a lot of money just to get such a lucky number.
Do \"Lucky Numbers\" really bring good luck? I don't think so. Luck, fortune, or fate, is controlled by ourselves, not by certain numbers. As the saying goes, \"No pains, no gains\". If you set up a goal and try very hard to reach it, you will succeed in the end, even though you have no lucky numbers to help you. But if you never make any efforts, you are sure to fail. Let's take the College English Test Band Four as an example. If you have studied very hard, you will pass it with ease. But if you are not well prepared, no lucky numbers will help you to ace it. Everybody should count on his or her hardworking, not the so-called lucky numbers.

Don't Hesitate to Say \"No\"
Sometimes we may find that we have to say \"No\" to others when they ask for help. Why? One situation may be that we are unable to do the things they ask us to do. The other situation may be that we are not willing to do so, because the things they ask us to do may be unreasonable or even illegal. On both occasions, we should say directly to them: \"No!\"
Nevertheless, in our daily life, some people tend to say \"Yes\" when they should say \"No\". They are afraid of losing their face, or in other words, they want to reserve their face. At the same time, they do not want to hurt others, such as their friends, relatives, and so on.
To say \"Yes\" when you should say \"No\" is a dangerous thing. On the one hand, ff you agree to help them but fail in the end because you lack the ability to do so, they may think that you are not a person worth trust. They will lose faith in you. On the other hand, ff you help them accomplish something bad or even illegal, you both will be punished for what you have done. So, always remember: Don't hesitate to say \"No\"!

Reading Selectively or Extensively?
What is your reading habit? Do you often read selectively or extensively? Every one of you may have your own opinion.
Some people think that we should read selectively. Why? Because we have so many books to read. There are thousands of new books being published every day. How can we have the time and energy to read them through? And many books are not worth reading at all. Reading them is just a waste of time. So we should read selectively.
Some people, on the contrary, hold that we should read extensively. They have their reasons
1
too. We are living in a knowledge-exploding era. If we cannot gather as much information as possible through reading, we will never keep pace with the development of society. Those books you read selectively may turn out to be full of knowledge that was totally out of date. Only through reading extensively can we adapt to the fast developing society.
In my opinion, we should first read extensively and then read selectively. By reading extensively, we can acquire knowledge in many different aspects. By reading selectively, we can firmly master the useful knowledge we need.

(四) How I Finance My College Education?
College education plays a very important role in people's life. With more and more people
entering the university, how to finance the college education has been an issue in debate. In fact, the problem can be dealt with in many ways. The easiest way is to get all the money from parents. If that is impossible, students can apply for a loan from the bank. Or, making money by doing a full-time job in summer and winter holidays is another solution. Maybe, the most possible way is to ask parents for the greater part of tuitions and fees with the rest paid by students themselves by doing a part-time job.
From my point of view, I will choose the last way to pay my tuitions and fees. ff my parents provide most of tuitions and fees for my college education, I can be absorbed in my study and don't worry too much about my life. Meanwhile, a part-time job in my spare time can supply me with some working experience, and make me know more about the society. Therefore, this way is the best one for me.

Is a Test of Spoken English Necessary?
A test of spoken English will be included as an optional component of the College English Test (CET).
Many people agree to this. They think oral communication is a very important part in English learning. If one can understand what foreigners say, but can't open his mouth and express himself in English, he seems to be dumb.
However, other people don't think so. They will say that oral English is not so necessary because it is nearly impossible for many people to talk with foreigners face to face.
As far as I'm concerned, I agree to the first viewpoint. With our society developing more and more quickly, people will have more chances to study abroad or to work with foreigners, and then, communication in English is very essential. Therefore, I've made up my mind to learn English well, and speak English fluently.

How to Succeed in a Job Interview?
Nowadays, students must seek jobs by themselves. Job interview is the only way to have access to the doom of the employers. So succeeding in a job interview is very important.
But how can one succeed in a job interview? Firstly, you should be very well prepared. Bring along as much information about yourself as possible: your diploma certification, your credit records, certification about your awards, your publications, and the most important of all, an excellently-designed resume, in both Chinese and English.
Secondly, you must pay much attention to your appearance. In order to prove yourself a well-educated person, you must first of all be dressed properly. While talking with the interviewer,
3
you should look at the one you are talking to with understanding eyes. While standing, you should stand firm, never making big gestures. While sitting, you should never sit cross-legged. Always remember to listen attentively to the person talking. A slight nod of your head is always timely to show your willingness to communicate.
Thirdly, you must be confident about yourself. Never be nervous. Let your smiling face show friendliness first. While talking about your strong points, be honest, never beast or even tell a lie.
4
Are you sure you are well prepared? You can go now, and you will succeed, without doubt.

A Letter to a Schoolmate
June 23,2001 Dear Xiao Wang,
I don't know how to express my happiness when I hear that you will come to see me during the week-long holiday. It has been 2 years since we last met. How I miss you! And I feel excited at the thought that we can make good use of this long holiday and play to our hearts' content. Oh, I cannot wait to see you.
I've made a plan as to how to fully utilize this holiday. As this is the first time you come to Guangzhou, I think we'd better have a sightseeing tour around it. So we can have a look at some of the symbolic buildings, such as Metropolitan Plaza and Xinghai Music Hall. We can also visit such historical spots as Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and the Original Site of Huangpu Military School. I'm sure this trip will leave a good impression on you. There're a lot of boutique stores on Beijing Road, where we can go shopping and buy clothes in different features and styles. On Saturday evening, a fashion show will be held on our campus. Some famous models will be invited to give an excellent performance in our university. We will have a wonderful time here.
Since a large number of people will go traveling in this long holiday. It must be crowded on the train. So take care of your belongings. What ‘s more , book a ticket ahead of time. And please tell me when you will arrive in Guangzhou. I will pick you up at the railway station. Longing to see you soon!
Yours, Zhang Ying
(八)A Letter to the University President about the Canteen Service on Campus January 12th, 2002 Dear Mr. President,
I am a sophomore in the Biology Department. I'm writing to tell you about some problems with the canteen service on campus and some suggestions on it.
We really don't think much of the quality of the food. The rice and bread are too hard for us to chew. The vegetables are often overcooked. Besides, the price of the food is too high. Every day we have to spend more than ten yuan on three meals. You know, some students' parents are farmers; some are common workers. They are even short of tuition fees. How can they afford such expensive meals? Furthermore, the attitude of the service staff to us is not acceptable.
5
Therefore, I suggest that we should have more than one canteen in the university. If there is competition between them, the above-mentioned problems will be solved more easily.
I sincerely hope that the canteen service will be improved earlier. All of us will appreciate it. Thank you!
Yours sincerely, Li Ming

(九) Student Use of Computers
The above chart shows that students have easier access to computers. In 1990, college students spent less than two hours in a week on computers. In 1995, the number doubled and came to nearly four, and then increased dramatically to almost 20 hours in 2000.
Several reasons account for the change. We are in the information age today. Computers are useful in editing and data processing; they make it easier for people to communicate with each other and they provide all sorts of information. If a student wants to get a promising job after graduation, he must be good at computers. This stimulates the students' interest in computers and encourages them to have a good command of them. The price is also an important factor. It costs much less to own a computer now. More and more students can afford them.
But some problems also arise. Some students spend much time playing computer games and they pay no attention to their studies; some students would rather chat with others than explore information on the Internet. This will do harm to students.
In a word, computers become very popular among students now, and how to make full use of them has caused much discussion among people.

It Pays to Be Honest
Honesty is a cherished Chinese traditional virtue. But nowadays there are many dishonest cases in society. Some businessmen cheat their customers for higher profits. Some employees cheat their bosses for higher positions. Some people cheat their friends for more money. Even some government officials cheat their people for more interests. These phenomena anger every person of integrity. Then, why do they come into being?
This may be because these people believe that nobody will find out their dishonesty. However, eventually their customers will come to purchase their products no more, their bosses will dismiss them, their friends no longer help them in case of their crisis, and their people will remove them from office. They pay the price for their own behavior. Therefore, everyone should be honest, which benefits not only himself but also others.

An Eye-Witness Account of a Traffic Accident
Six o'clock yesterday (June 20th,Friday) afternoon when I was walking along the riverbank of our school,an unbelievable scene caught my eyes.
A black taxi was rushing head on into the river! Astonished as I was,I still had the presence to take a look into the car before it fell into the water. As it was only about five meters away from me,I could see that the driver was the only person in it.He seemed unconscious of where he was driving until I waved my arms to stop him,but it was too late. Splash!
I am wondering how this could happen--the river runs perfectly parallel with the main road and
7
there are no turns or twists nearby. The possible causes I can think of are that the driver was too exhausted or drunken to drive consciously or that he was so hot that he wanted to have a free bath.

( 十 三 ) A Brief Introduction to a Tourist Attraction My dear friends,
Welcome to Shanghai! And today I am very glad to have the honor to be your tour guide and show you around this city, which is crowned as \"the oriental pearl\". I hope you will enjoy your sightseeing here.
The schedule for today is as follows: our tour starts from the Bund (Wai Tan in Chinese) on the west bank of the Huangpu River, and we will visit Yu Yuan Garden before traveling to the opposite bank, where the Oriental Pearl Tower is located.
The Bund is a must for any visitor to Shanghai, especially for you, my foreign friends, because you will feel at home there when you see the collection of Western architecture alongside. Yu Yuan Garden is an ancient historical site, where you may sense the traditional Chinese culture. And I guess this is also what you really want in coming to China. As for our last stop, the 468-metre-high Oriental Pearl Tower, it is a landmark of this city. From the top of it, you may have a bird-view of the beauty as well as the hustle and bustle of Shanghai.
Now, come on. Here we go!

My dear fellow students,
It's my great honor to have the chance to deliver a speech here and I'm grateful for it. Impressed as I am by the excellent speeches made by the previous candidates, I'll prove myself to be the best one for the post of chairman of the student union.
First of all, I have a pleasant personality. As a class monitor in my past freshman year, I've been getting along well with all my classmates as well as my teachers and have accumulated quite a lot of working experience and communication skills, which I regard as essential for the post I'm

running for.
In addition, I have the initiative and creativity. Although our student union is
well-organized at present, it lacks various activities that we students are interested in and can participate in. I premise, if I am to be elected, I'll change the situation and make the student union a bridge between students and the university.
So, my wise friends, vote for yourself and vote for me -- because I'm your hope and your best choice! Thank you!
