This novel is an exciting but tragic adventure story. Sustained by the pride of his calling, a broken old fisherman ventures was far out into the Gulf Stream and there hooked the biggest marlin that never seen in those waters. Then, alone and exhausted by his struggle to harpoon the giant fish, he was forced into a losing battle with marauding sharks ; they leave him nothing but the skeleton of his catch.
On another level this book is a fable of the unconquerable spirit of man, a creature capable of snatching spiritual victory from circumstances of disaster and material defeat.
Morewhile, it is a parable of religious significance, its theme supported by the writer's unobtrusive handling of Christian symbols and metaphors. Hemingway's Cuban fisherman is a character allowing the imagination of his creator to operate simultaneously in two different worlds of meaning and value, the one real and dramatic, the other moral and devotionally symbolic.
When we read \" the senior fisherman think: Here to the seacoast really was too near, perhaps could have a bigger fish in a farther place... \" , we admire this senior fisherman. Though he have not caught any fish or settled to the transparrent situation at that time, he still believe hope ,even make the bigger goal . We will be the motherland future, thus ,we are supposed to like this old person‟s mind , have a better pursue as well as the bigger goal. One more effort and we‟ll succeed.
When we read “ the big marlin start fast to gather round the young fishing boat hover, twined the cable on the mast, the old person right hand lifted up high the steel fork, leapt the water surface in it the flash, did utmost throws to its heart, one wail ended the big fish„s life, it was static static floats on the water surface... ”, we extremely admire the old person . Although he knew the match is difficult to win with the big fish, he is not slightly afraid of those flinches, and grasp the nettle. Just because of this kind of spirit, the senior fisherman can overcome the threat of death ,achieve himself goal ,and get succeed. We also should learn senior fisherman's spirit , handle the matter and never give up. Don't fear the difficult, because they give me the chance to challenge.
Howover,the most impressed word is that “A man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” when it comes to failure, most of us avoid conspicuously. As a matter of fact, those who have face and challenge have never obtained success,they are born to be nearer to so-called “failure”. Some people who are dedicated to reform the society, economy, culture and politics is more likely to be the first sacrifice. However, this kind of “success” utmost dues to his desire that want to make money, fame and status . All of these are not success. whether failure nor success, we all keep the faith.This is success. Though the old man doesn‟t accomplish his initial goal, he is not a failure.On the contrary, he is remembered as a hero.
Of course I also will remember it for good.And many of the classical sentences conduct me . After I read the book,it stimulates me a lot. I learned that if you want to your dream‟s come ture,you should get up earily .And it reminds me of my high school‟s study, you may succeed in the College entrance examination for the first time, but ,you know, for me a remediation student ,I should bear my burden in my way.So I had to find a mean to weight my study and my lives. My best friend recommended me a book written by the USA. famous writer Hemingway ,a Nobel Prize for Literature winner, and named The Old Man and the Sea.The powerful words,“But a man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated”have been encouraged me ever since .
We are all together striving for more or less the same things. I think the failure is inevitable.Sometimes it is a good thing,because it may be a nature part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it . A certain amount of unlucky or failure is vital to provide motivation ,chanllenges and opportunities for learning.We should do our utmost to achieve our goal .Yes ,we are not made for defeat.So we don‟t let our yesterday hinder our tomorrow‟s achievements.We should say goodbye to the past and still go on bravely.Just as Bradstreet said that if wehad no winter ,the spring would not so pleasant; if we didn‟t sometimes taste of adversity,prosperty would not be so welcome.
Doing nothing means admitting that you have been defeated. It is silly not to hope. We must have the faith of success. Whatever difficulty it is , whenever you are ,you can‟t lose hope any more. Where is a will, there is a way, thinking of the old man and his sea ,you can get some inspiration.
This novel eulogize the spirit which facing hard and dangerous situation, the senior fisherman do not retreat.We should learn it and carry out it. So we could not satisfy the present situation, should be positive to do anything.Treat the matter as a chance and
challenge, welcome them, and give up halfway in no way. Only this, we then can obtain a bigger success and victory.
